I decided to try this restaurant after I read many reviews by the Japanese that this place is a must visit to try the Kyoto style veggie table-based small dishes. They do have a few animal based protein options such as egg, mackerel and pork. When I visited the store they had a total of 11 small dishes to choose from. They ask you to choose by the number. They don’t provide the name of each dish in English so you may want to ask if you need to avoid certain ingredients. Houjicha is self served. The taste is very mild and great for breakfast. The tofu soup I ordered has rice inside, which I didn’t notice in the beginning and wondered where my rice is. I’d definite come back next time for another breakfast. Read moreThis was one of the more “unique” dinning experiences my wife and I will remember for our Japan trip. We felt we did not consume enough vegetables and we decided to look for a place to have some delicious vegetables and we ended up here.
You may order a default set or customise your own items. I ordered a premium set with 12 items and my wife chose a set with 6 items. I guess the concept is to enjoy fresh vegetables as well as some premium Japanese pickles as many varieties as possible. The sauce is unique and delicate for every single piece. It always strikes a good balance - neither too salty nor too mild. Lastly, I just want to say it was such an enjoyment by simply looking at its presentation!
My only advice for those big eaters is that even the portion of a premium set might not be enough...

For tourists, if you are visiting - You will need to order through an electronic booth. There is only Japanese-language available, but pictures are provided and ordering is straightforward. After pressing order confirmation, payment can be made thru credit or cash. Then proceed to choose which dishes (by number) you want from the display counter, there is a mix of hot and cold. Bring your dishes to your table and rice/miso will be served later.
For breakfast from (7-1045) or lunch (1045-3) you can choose between a 4 or 6 dish set with miso soup and rice. After 11, you can order the special gozen set with more dishes.
