Men-ya Mitsuru — Restaurant in Kyoto

I've been on a hunt for chicken ramen (I love ramen but I actually haven't had much chicken broth style). So on the way back to the hotel saw this place and had to pop in. We had an extra large serve of noodles to be dipped in chicken broth, extra large ramen (Chuka style of fish, chicken and beef broth) and gyoza. We shared between three. To be honest I wasn't expecting much as the place looks a bit tired but.... very tasty 😋 ramen. Both the chicken and Chuka broth were so flavoursome, the bamboo shoots were tasty with a nice crunch, the soft boiled egg was awesome, the chashu (pork) was melt in the mouth goodness. I prefer noodles on the firmer side, and these noodles had a good texture and spring in the bite. Gyoza were ok, but I would give them a miss next time. The menu and ticket machine are in English and Japanese so ordering is easy. It is an open kitchen and the cook was hypervigilant in cleaning up during cooking...which makes you feel safe as a diner. It has counter seating. This place is worth a try if...

I found this humble cute place by chance when I was wondering around at 22:30 (so many places were already closed )and what a great surprise it was ! I had the creamy Miso based chicken ramen - not only I was so happy to find at last a chicken Ramen (4 kinds!!, not just pork) , but also it was rich full of flavors and different textures (chicken chunks , chicken balls, chicken (kind of) dumplings , eggs and more ! The staff was sooo welcoming and nice , helped me with all my questions about the food (and culture!) and made me feel so welcome ! Just a minute walk from Shijo Dori ....

Avoid! This place was not crowded. I should have taken it as a sign that it is not popular, apart from it located in a tourist part of Kyoto. Ramen took 35 mins to prepare. Disorganised, and served those who came after me. The man in the photo was plain rude when I reminded him about the delay.

Mediocre ramen. Any instant ramen in a foam bowl would have been superior. The ramen was rushed and undercooked. Meatball tasteless and uninspired. Why would anyone even come here? I have never been more dissatisfied with a ramen in my 20 plus...
