My fellow tourists love to use adjectives like”the best ramen in Japan” or “best ramen ever” and that feels cheesy and impossible, but the taste of the broth, care for ingredients and dedication to mastery makes this ramen awesome in my book. We were at the door at 16:57 and on the dot at 17:00, the door has opened and the owner asked us to use machine to make an order (cash only). This place has 4 options of dishes for you to choose from and then you choose big or small size of the bowl, thin or thick noodles, the amount of chicken, when you order it, drinks and anything extra like rice or extra boiled egg. It is always a good sign when the place has limited menu, they are experts in what they do over and over again. Tiny place, with two sitter downstairs and tables for 4 upstairs. Food comes straight away and while you are drinking you can educate yourself about their types of peppers available on the table and read about their ingredients and where they come from. Creamy broth is divine, noodles are chewy and wonderful and three types of cooked cold chicken sliced nicely on the additional plate. I was very hungry and ordered the big bowl, managed to finish it but was stuffed up to my eyeballs ;) The atmosphere gets four stars because of the very close proximity...
Read moreJust had the most upsetting and embarrassing experience here. I went with my daughter and husband for a meal and because I have a serious food allergy I didn’t order food. The owner came to tell us we needed to order another meal. I showed her my allergy card that explained I couldn’t eat due to the risk of a life threatening reaction. She continued to say that I wasn’t allowed to not eat food. I understood it was her right to insist people eat so I apologised and said I’d leave I told my family I’d see them at home and went to put on my shoes. She then came up to me and started manhandling me towards the food ordering machine saying ‘lady you order meal’. Other customers were turning to stare at what was happening. I told her I just wanted to leave and she physically held me back. I had to squirm free. I felt mortified and humiliated. It would have made no difference to have me sit beside my husband and daughter who were eating - but I also was prepared to leave without a fuss when asked to do so. My family later said that she said that she’d been trying to show me that there were things on the menu she thought I could eat so I understand there was a misunderstanding. But being physically manhandled in the way I was was very upsetting and...
Read moreJust had my first bowl of ramen in Kyoto and I feel like I got real lucky here at Raneb Katamuki. You order at the vending machine at the entrance, hand yer tickets to a staff member, and grab a seat downstairs or upstairs in this former Machaya building. They make vegan/ halal and chicken soup base ramen here. Our party had the soy sauce soyu vegetarian, light chicken broth and the thick (or heavy) chicken broth with the small noodles. We loved each version we had. The gyozas are good, our rice and chicken side dishes were tasty too. Adding the yuzu kosho (fermented yuzu peal, chilli pepper and salt paste) is the right move with the chicken. Overall the staff was super friendly to us Americans, and the food comes out in rapid succession. So if yer a gajin, yer gonna feel totally chill and happy. They’ve only been open for a month and they obviously know how to rock service. Will...
