Tanuki Chaya — Restaurant in Osaka

Fantastic izakaya experience. Most drinks and food orders are only 330 yen (after tax) each. Definitely make a reservation online (we used Gurunavi) as the place is absolutely packed after 6:30.

Food-wise, everything was delicious. Highly recommend the large, salt-grilled shrimp, the scallops and the grilled rice balls. Personally wouldn’t recommend the beef skewers as much as the seafood and chicken ones as you get one skewer per order compared to two for most skewers and they were a bit tougher. The sashimi moriawase platter is great value, as with most things here.

If you can, try to sit at the counter. Virtually all the grilled items are prepared very quickly by one person and it’s extremely impressive to watch. To make things even faster for them, they use a paddle to hand you the dishes...

This was such a great experience. The food and the service were really good. Waiters were attentive to see when we needed something and after we ordered, the food came out pretty quick, considering that all the tables were full. We ordered so much food and I have 0 complaints about any of them. I don't know any Japanese but it was fine with finger points and order so I think with a translator and patience from both sides it would be a great experience. They take card and cash. Also, if you want something a bit more private you can make a reservation. Do NOT be late, because as you may know, Japanese people are on time. March 2024: Recommended by my hotel because I’m looking for a robata restaurant. The food is good and they have english menu. Will come back whenever i’m in Osaka.

Edit: September 2024 I went to the restaurant again after 6 months, and this restaurant is the reason why I go to Osaka. It is even better than last time, all of the food and drinks that we ordered are delicious. I tried their peach fizz and it is now my favorite cocktail. Literally the best restaurant in Osaka 😭👍🏻 I will definitely come back. Everyone is there to drink, but I actually go there for dinner since everything is good 😊
