American — Restaurant in Tokyo

Stopped by around 8:45 with no wait and only two other patrons. The place seats about 12-16 persons with American RnB playing in the background. The table that I sat at was very low so for a taller guy like me (6'4, 193 cm), it was a bit rough.

There is a one drink minimum when ordering in and each drink runs for about JPY 800 and up (they're very large). English menu available but the staff speaks very limited English so non-Japanese speakers should just point at the menu when ordering. There's also a 1 hour maximum for all patrons (posted on the walls)

Ordered the roast chicken sandwich and the egg salad sandwich. The "sandwich" is literally a loaf of shoku-pan (Japanese milk-bread) cut haphazardly in quarters then again the fillings haphazardly piled on top. The egg salad is mayonnaise only with no salt or pepper and the roast chicken is a bit dry with a squeeze of thousand island dressing on top. The bread is soft and fluffy but given the thickness (5 or 6 cm so), it's really more bread than anything. The shop provides take-out boxes for free given most people cannot finish the entire portion.

The breakfast is a novelty located in the upscale Ginza neighborhood, Cafe American is a fascinating living piece of neighborhood history. However, the sandwich is more of a gimmick rather than warranting...

HUGE portions when dining in. Lots of carbs! But the sandwich bread is soft and yummy. With the huge portions, you will get tired of the taste before you get full. The dining room is charming. Lots of pictures of Japanese famous people put up on the wall with other paraphernalia. Visually very interesting. Don’t look at it that long because then you will see why I gave this place only two stars. I saw four separate cockroaches. I was able to reach and squish only two of them. On the dining table and the dining wall which I could touch without extending my arm all the way. When I saw the first one, then I just looked for the twitching antennas and saw four in quick succession. The decorations on the walls are so eclectic that you most likely won’t notice the insects until you look for them. Started giving me that feeling that they were crawling on my legs and skin… Turned me off of the meal very quickly. Before that, the atmosphere was interesting and the food was yummy. Will...

Visited here in early morning at 29th Oct, 2024. Fortunately, we could get sheets without waiting time. The atmosphere were like old Japanese Cafe (1980's in Japan).

Ordered Egg sandwiches, Pastrami sandwiches, hot caffe au lait and Yogurt juice. Sandwiches were so big compared with other restaurants' sandwich in Japan.

This cafe has complex rules. If you visit here, it would confuse you. so take note that...

One person has to order at least one sandwich and one drink. Payment method is only "Cash" Once you finish to eat and drink, you should leave there immediately ( Cause there is long queue and there are few seats). Don't use laptop PC in here. As I mentioned above, sandwiches are so big. Hence if you can't eat all, please call staff to get doggy bag. you can take away them.

I recommend to visit here in early morning (8:30AM to 10:00AM). In Lunchtime, I believe there is long queue and it's hard...
