I’m leaving Tokyo in a few days and it’s a good time to visit some of my neighborhood hangouts which have made my Tokyo experience so enriching in the past 6 weeks. Tonight, I headed back to Hashinokuchi, my neighborhood super-izakaya/ bistro. Run by Hashinokuchi san and his wife, this beautiful restaurant turns out seasonal plates that are classically anchored into Japanese cuisine, but add a touch of influence from their travels. We enjoyed rare, super high end beef like Kumamoto Aso Akauchi (aged 50 days) slaughtered by one of Japan’s top butchers in Shiga; Tachiuo shioyki; takomeshi; smoked gizzards and chicken liver (amazing!) and seasonal vegetables like the different types of daikon. We even had a Taiwanese influences Lu rou with Renkon. The sake list is outstanding, packed with seasonal sakes, and if you are a craft beer fan, they even stock a Brewpunk Dortmunder. Read moreEating here is such a joy. The chef and his wife are such a power couple, so warm and inviting and good at what they do. Chefs food are all well executed and he knows what he is doing. His chicken livers are the best I have ever eaten in my life, and that chicken thigh. It looks deceptive, but it is so juicy and packed with flavourful that I’m in awe at how good it is. The keema curry is light and flavourful, together with the delicious HANTA somen, it’s a great slurping treat. The alcohol selections are great and very reasonable.
