One of my top must-try foods on our trip to Japan was Unagi. I’m not going to lie, at the time we visited, I just wanted a restaurant where I could sit down and rest my very sore and tired feet. I told my husband a few food options that I was in the mood for and he found this one. The restaurant wasn’t too far from where we were in the park and they had unagi on the menu. Win-win!
The restaurant is so beautiful inside and fancier than I was dressed for, but luckily that didn’t matter. We had a wonderful waitress who spoke English and offered some great recommendations. We both ordered an unagi set and tea.
The soup was like a miso cooked with eel liver. Light and refreshing but a tad on fishy side which I kind of expected. The unagi bento was delicious! Perfectly grilled and melted in my mouth. And the rice was amazing, especially with the juices and sauce having soaked in. On it’s own though, I have never had better rice. Soft, slightly sweet, not too sticky.
I highly recommend stopping in if you’re...
Read moreHigher end eel restuarant. We arrived at 2pm with no reservation and got in straightaway. Very attentive, polite staff. A relatively small restuarant with sophisticated feel. They have different size eel rice sets, small, medium and large. They also have a selection of side dishes for ordering. We paid just over JPY6,000 for their medium sized eel rice box. This came with pickles and Japanese soup. We also ordered separately a steamed egg for about JPY900. The eel was very tasty. Price range here is higher than the eel restuarant opposite side of the road, but the advantage here is that there was no wait. We had tried the restuarant opposite the road first, but they had a 1 hour wait. So we thought it was more reasonable to eat here as it gave us more time for sightseeing as we are tourists. In total we spent JPY13,000 for the 2 of us. They have a...
Read moreThis is the cheapest set since I’ll have dinner soon. Waited for quite a while (around 30 mins) but totally worth it. You can tell the eel is freshly grilled, as the edge of it is a bit crunchy. The souce and the rice perfectly matched the eel. And the soup was also great, made with the eel liver, totally fresh and no horrible flavor. If you are to try the grilled eel in Tokyo, can definitely consider this one near the Ueno park. A small but a professional restaurant, they provide...
