Complaint About Service at Onigiri Asakusa Yadoroku

I would like to express my dissatisfaction with the service at Onigiri Asakusa Yadoroku during my recent visit. Despite the quality of the food, the negative experience with the staff has left me hesitant to return. Instead , we found a more welcoming alternative at Asakusa Onigiri Haruchan with much better service and yummy onigiri.

Background: My family and I had visited Onigiri Asakusa Yadoroku last year and enjoyed the food, so we decided to visit again recently. Knowing there would be a queue for seats, two of us arrived at 10:45 AM to queue, asking my 88-year-old father and 78-year-old aunt to join us later to avoid them having to stand in line.

What happened: Early Opening: The shop opened earlier than the stated 11:30 AM, which was not an issue by itself. Not allowed to enter : Although we were 4th or 5th in line, the staff refused to allow us to enter the restaurant because our whole party was not present. This policy seemed reasonable. Discriminatory Treatment: What was unreasonable was the staff's decision to issue queue numbers to the remaining people in the queue , easily at least eight other groups while refusing to issue us one, despite our explanation that our elderly family members were on their way.

Impact: When my entire family finally arrived, our seating time was pushed to 12:20 PM. This delay was due to the staff's refusal to issue a queue number to us earlier, which I found to be unfair. It is understandable that all members need to be present to be seated, but refusing to give us a queue number while providing them to others was unjust.

Conclusion: Food is about more than just eating; it is an overall experience. The experience at Onigiri Asakusa Yadoroku left a bad taste even before we had the chance to enjoy...

Nestled just a short stroll from the iconic Sensoji Temple, Onigiri Asakusa Yadoroku is a hidden gem that has garnered Michelin recognition for its exquisite onigiri. This tiny eatery, with its limited seating, often has a line forming before it even opens at 11 a.m., and for good reason. The anticipation builds as you watch locals and tourists alike eagerly await their chance to experience this culinary delight.

Upon entering, the warm and inviting atmosphere sets the stage for a memorable meal. The menu, though concise, features a rotating selection of onigiri that showcases the restaurant's commitment to quality and flavor. We opted for the salmon roe onigiri, and it did not disappoint.

The rice was flawlessly cooked—each grain distinct yet tender, offering a perfect base for the bold flavors of the filling. The salmon roe added a delightful pop, balancing briny richness with the subtle sweetness of the rice. It was evident that every ingredient was chosen with care, contributing to a harmonious dish that highlights the beauty of simplicity in Japanese cuisine.

Dining at Onigiri Asakusa Yadoroku is not just about the food; it’s an experience. After exploring the bustling streets around Sensoji, this little haven serves as a delightful pause, inviting you to savor each bite. Just be prepared for the wait—it’s worth it. Whether you’re a seasoned onigiri enthusiast or trying it for the first time, Yadoroku is a must-visit for anyone seeking a taste of authentic...

Fell in love with the food here on my first visit.

Found this place on TikTok, both for it being a Michelin star restaurant and the oldest onigiri store.

Was here on a weekday, at about 15 mins after opening (overestimated the distance from Sensō-ji temple), queued for about 1.5h.

A rather small shop, but really enjoyed the atmosphere of the place. Ordered a set consisting of 2 onigiris: 1 with salmon roe and another with squid innards (out of curiosity)

Thoroughly enjoyed the onigiris which were freshly made and hot. (Though the squid innards one was really salty 🤣)

The salmon roe onigiri was oozing with creaminess and the delectable taste of the sea, accompanied by the crispiness of the seaweed. The rice in the onigiri was also well seasoned and cooked, with a smooth taste of vinegar. 🤤

The miso soup was perfectly seasoned and balanced, a refreshing accompaniment to end the meal.

Would definitely recommend coming down to this place, though I would recommend coming early as there was a sign placed outside shortly after I was seated, informing those queueing that they were sold out...

No doubt you've already read about this place in guidebooks and online. You'll need to line up, it's a small, local establishment so preferably get to the location before opening time later in the day. Once inside it's a modest, intimate interior that puts you in close proximity to the chef making the onigiri. You're here for the food and it's good. If there's two of you, you both will need to order something, it's not big enough for spectators. The rice is king in onigiri and it was certainly sticky with slight vinegar and notes. Nori was fresh and of the thicker guage variety but still retaining the necessary crunchiness. Fillings we tried were salmon, salted plum and shrimp. All of which were generous servings for onigiri and about as freshly made as you can get it seeing as it's handed to you the moment it's finished. Once you've had your fill, it's time to move on as no doubt other patrons are waiting to eat as well. Take a walk down the road outside and visit one of the nearby temples to help you digest. Cash only.
