Vege Herb Saga Ueno — Restaurant in Tokyo

I have eaten a lot of Hindi food in Europe, and while the food here didn’t taste bad, were it not for the prices and a few things I’d give a much higher rating.

The main praise is that a lot of the food is vegan, and when I pointed out I didn’t see vegan options for sweets they made one for me (wasn’t the best outcome but the effort is appreciated).

I was with a friend, so we wanted to try different things. We took two snacks and two main meal along two sweets.

The above came out at about 8000 yen. At the time I paid without trying to think too much about it, but the higher pricing of the dishes does add up in the end.

Another thing is that the space was kind of cramped, and water isn’t available on the table but needs to be asked. The food came separately and took a while, there was however only one other Hindi family besides us at the time of ordering.

Other people waited as well some time, but somehow finished earlier than us. The waiter had forgotten to bring the sweets, and the other person also didn’t remember what we ordered although the bill was at the register, he asked twice if we had Lassi, which we didn’t.

The waiters have a direct attitude, which can be hit and miss: if you like earnest and open people then that will be for you, they will suggest you how to eat and talk regarding the food. But this can become problematic if you want to enjoy a calm atmosphere or take your time ordering.

Overall my friend felt bad for the high price after choosing the place, and I also didn’t feel fully satisfied. Coupled with some problems which might have been dependent on the evening (it was Friday, I assume they had many people before us, or were tired) it made the experience more ok than good.

What an incredible experience. We absolutely LOVED visiting this restaurant. The staff were very enthusiastic and care deeply about their food and this really comes through in their cooking. We ordered vegan and there was no problem, the staff were extremely attentive and filled our water whenever it was running low, and were very amiable with us and other guests. They were really excited when we tried their curry and liked it. Although the steps downstairs are steep and their Japanese may not be fluent, please do not let that put you off going to this restaurant. The food and the staff are lovely. 10/10. Also there’s about a million different options on the menu, so you will definitely find something delicious and to your taste!

I know some reviewers are stating that the portions are too small. They are not, they are not huge but you are paying for quality and experience of the chefs, and the three of us left the restaurant full after ordering 2 curries, 2 roti and a portion of rice. This is the best Indian in Tokyo for a reason, and probably the best Indian I’ve ever had. Not oily, full of flavour, and although slightly more expensive, definitely worth a visit.

This is the best Indian restaurant I came across in Tokyo. I'm an Indian vegetarian and was having hard time figuring out vegetarian Indian food. This is the only restaurant with the most authentic and original Indian taste. I tried atleast 4 different restaurants but this one was the best. They have the best taste, just like we were eating in India. I never felt that I was far from home eating in a foreign country. Other restaurants have a weird spice mix/recipe, but they had the best food!

I had there north indian thali which comes at a cost of 3500 yen. Although the price might be slightly high, but it's absolutely worth it! Each and every single dish in the thali was of original Indian taste.

The staff there is also very friendly and helpful. I don't remember there names but they were very kind and helpful. I was alone in Tokyo for the first time and they gave me good suggestions as to how to get vegetarian food in Japan.

Will definitely visit them whenever I visit Tokyo again.

This was my only go to restaurant. I use to order dinner from them via Uber Eats at night as I was staying a bit far.
