First, let me get this out of the way… is it the best canele in Penang? Quite possibly.
Stumbled across this patisserie last month when wandering the streets of Penang and looking for somewhere to sit down and have a coffee. I was pleasantly surprised to find they also sell my favourite kind of pastry - canele.
The shop is very clean and modern with limited seating as their main focus seems to be takeaway business.
In terms of food, the selection is rather small compared to other similar shops on the island, but what I sampled was good. In particular, I’d highly recommend the canele. They’re the best I’ve had in Malaysia so far - better than La Vie En Rose and chains like Paul - and could maybe compete with my favourite canele I’ve had in the UK.
Service wasn’t the fastest, but I think this is probably due to the care taken. I saw the barista behind the bar very carefully preparing my matcha drink with a proper matcha whisk. The service is very friendly. The boss took some time to chat with me once he realised I’m a canele fan and explained that the difference with his canele is he freezes them and lets them thaw before serving to improve the crunchy texture.
When we decided to eat one of our takeaway canele in the shop (along with a cake we ordered), the boss offered to help us thaw and cut it. He then gave us an ice pack for the rest of the frozen takeaway canele so we could take them back home.
I think if there was a bit more selection on the menu and some more seating, I would’ve given this place 5 stars. But I’ll certainly be back to grab some takeaway canele when I’m next...
Read moreA hidden gem offering exquisite treat: canelés, which are not commonly found in Malaysia. The young owners are incredibly patient and passionate about their creations, taking the time to explain the intricacies of their canelés and cakes with enthusiasm!
The canelés are frozen and served thawed before eating (which is quite different from the ones that I’ve tried that were heated before served), and they are absolutely delicious! The outer layer is crispy, and the lemon curd filling is incredibly refreshing.
Apart from the canelés, they also have a fantastic selection of canelé inspired cakes. I tried the charcoal earl grey canelé-inspired cake, and it was superb! The earl grey filling was rich and flavorful, giving an ice-cream like texture making it a perfect treat for tea lovers. Will definitely come back for the tiramisu flavour which was sadly sold out.
To complement the pastries, I also tried their hojicha drink, which was delightful. Overall, I highly recommend this shop for anyone looking for unique pastries.
Do note that they offer limited seating options since their focus is on takeaway orders, and each customer is required to order at...
Read moreThe usual street to pass by on Fridays looking for food for dinner. I have noticed Tosca but didn't stop by most of the time. Since dinner was done quite early, I conveniently made my way with my 2 wheels here. Greetings and the introduction of what they had to offer were done by the gentleman at the counter. It's hard to find a cafe or could be I never stumble upon that offers canele Anyways, let's go for Dark Choc canele with ice cream. Next on the order is an inspired mouse cake -Charcoal Earl Grey. Americano is my drink to go. Verdicts are, selected canele with vanilla ice cream surprisingly went well with Americano. How did that happen? Hmmm Charcoal earl grey is a bit sweet for me but not to the extend for a sweet tooth person. Outlet has limited seatings. I would prefer a higher table for better experience enjoying the...
