This is one of those Modern Kopitiam Franchise that are available all around JB. Even on a Monday Afternoon when I was there, it was quite Popular and Crowded. Luckily the Queue moves relatively fast and I was still able to get a Seat in less than 2 Mins of Queuing.
I'd like to take this Opportunity to Compliment the Entrance Welcoming Staff who was Polite, Calm and Collected even though there were a Crowd of Customers. It felt as if she was in Full Control of the Situation.
001 Kopi-O 咖啡烏 (Hot, No Sugar) = RM3.90
Comes with 4 Small Cute Baby Fish Biscuits. This is Very Unique and the First Time i've seen a Modern Kopitiam Franchise do this for a Cup of Kopi-O.
The Roasted Coffee Smell is not very strong and this is Not a Very Strong Coffee. Adding the Little Baby Fish Biscuits into the Coffee looked Rediculously Adorable! They taste exactly how you would imagine a Generic Biscuit would taste. I suppose they are trying to Emulate the Old School Style of People dunking "Hup Seng Soda-Pia" Biscuits into Coffee? While I'm not a fan of their Coffee, I love the Creativity they have for this!
108 Sambal Egg Cucumber Toast 鸡蛋参巴香烤面包 = RM6.50
I like that its 2 Pieces of Thick Bread Toast and not sliced thinly. Comes with 3 Slices of Cucumbers, again not thinly sliced, 1 Small Egg Omelette, a Few Pieces of Caramelized Onions and some Slathering of Sambal.
There aren't alot of Sambal, this is not those Thick Thick Gao Gao Alot type. Its Haebee Based, Not Spicy and Tastes more Sweetish. The Haebee Taste is also not Very Strong Gao Gao type. The Whole Sambal tasted Considerably Mild.
While I appreciated that their Toppings are using Standard Sized Sliced Cuts and there are No Attempts to Cut Thinly to Cut Cost, I felt the Sambal here lacked a Certain Oomph and the Amount of Sambal was abit lacking. But thats just my Opinion because I prefer my Sambal Toasts to be alot Spicier 重口味 and Thick Gao Gao type.
118 Signature Sunshine Egg Tart 福氣太阳蛋挞 = RM4.80 each
This leans more towards the Portugeuse-Styled with a More Flaky Skin rather then using Cookie Type of Tart-Shell. No Complaints about the Skin, Very Standard Taste.
The Amount of Egg Filling is Thick as you can see in the Cross Section in my Photo Collection. It's Sweet but Not Overly So. Compared to other Egg Tarts, I feel this is considered one of the Less Sweet ones i've tasted. Texture of the Egg Filling is not the Super Soft Type, yet also not as Firm.
Curry Potato Egg Tart 咖喱马铃薯蛋挞 = RM6.20 each
The Actual Tart itself is actually abit Smaller than their Signature Egg Tart. The Filling is a Mix of Potato Filling on Top followed by their Regular Sweet Egg Tart Filling at the Bottom. Despite looking exactly like a Curry Puff Filling, it tastes Sweetish, Not Savoury. Not the type of Curry Filling that I like.
When this is Mixed with their Regular Sweet Egg Tart Filling, I personally find it Too Wierd a Combination. The 2 Tastes in this Did Not Gel very well for me and I thought they Clashed Too Harshly. Not something I'd order again.
I do appreciate their Attempt at Creativity for this though, and they should not be faulted for trying to innovate and creating something new.
Conclusion and Closing Thoughts
Total Combined Price of RM24.80 (S$7.20) for everything I ordered was Reasonable although I feel you can skip their Curry Potato Egg Tart which will shave S$1.80 off your Total.
At RM3.90 (S$1.20), I absolutely adore the Cute Baby Fish Biscuits that was served with their Kopi-O which I have not seen done elsewhere.
While nothing else here really stood out or impressed me, If you are here in City Square Mall, this is a Decent and Acceptable Eatery to come visit.

Read moreThe first time I visited alone on weekday, so far everything gone well. But the second time when I having dinner here w family on weekends, lots of problems happened. Some of the food was took long time to wait, only reached 2 dishes and 1drink at first, after 2person of us finished their food, the third dishes and 2nd drinks just reached, but after these have been finished, the rest haven't serve yet, not sure it's the kitchen missed out our food or not, the food only served after we asked the staff.
2.The fried chicken is still raw! My family order fried chicken mee siam and share one fried chicken to me, after I eat one bite and noticed part of it was raw ! My family had finished all already before I tried, so not sure it's only one piece got problem or actually all the fried chicken was undercooked but my family didn't notice. The supervisor (maybe)was doing well, he come to apologize to us sincerely and offered us 10% discount for the whole bill. However, I still think the management and kitchen should pay more attention on this problem as it's might caused serious effect of customer's health especially when a child accidentally ate a raw meat.
3.The straw that staff provide to me was broke and hurt my lips🫠🫠
4.Staff should make sure the eating utensils in the box are enough/refilled before lead customer to the table. I visited the restaurant twice ,and every time the cutlery was less and no enough for us.
So far we are satisfied for the food, especially satay fried kuey teow and Mee Siam. Kitchen also change to chicken shredded for me after I remarks no seafood for kuey teow. The taste of ABC ice kacang also nice, just the portion was too small and the topping less , doesn't match for...
Read moreA little surprised when I visited this place today as it is their grand opening at Hock Kee Kopitiam at City Square Mall!
First impression of this place is a reminiscence of our grandparents' time because all time chinese classic oldies were playing in the background. Place was clean and tables were reasonably spaced apart. Definitely a good choice of place for catch up over kopi and roti.
Food wise, I started off with the traditional menu and perhaps i can try other stuff the next time.
I ordered iced kopi-C kosong. Aroma is great, strength of beans are medium-strong. If compared with Oriental Kopi, I'd think kopi at HK.K is superior. I'm pretty sure kopi will taste better if i have chosen hot version.
I ordered a steamed roti bun with kaya butter. Roti bun is fluffy and light. In my opinion the best way to go is to steam it. There are 2 options to be served, toast or steamed. For this dish, they offer 2 choices of bread - standard roti or roti bun. I love the bread here and definitely will specifically come back for it again. Hope Hock Kee can keep their standards high!
I ordered egg tart as well. It is not bad. In my opinion, I prefer Oriental Kopi's standard egg tart better. Over here at HK.K, the custard isn't as smooth and soft as O.K. The crust is too crispy for me, may be a good plus point for crispy crust lovers!
My wife ordered whole meal bun with kaya. I tried a bite. Whole meal bun is toasted and it tasted delicious. Kaya is a little to sweet for me. But again what is kaya if its too bland.
Overall, I would come back to HK.K again for the fact that price here is slightly cheaper than O.K for my preferred choice of food. Plus.. no crazy...
