Belgian Chocolate Egg Tart (2 Pieces) = RM12.80
Service Tax 6% = RM2.28 Service Charge 10% = RM3.80
This is a Modern Kopitiam thats Nicely Renovated and Cleanly Maintained. I ordered their 3 Most Popular Food Items here Collectively Known and Proudly Proclaimed in their Menu as "华阳三宝" (The 3 Treasures of Oriental Kopi)
It took 2 Mins for the Egg Tarts, 4 Mins for the Kopi and Amusingly 12 Mins for the Polo Bun which I will explain later why the delay.
301 华阳咖啡 Oriental Kopi (No Sugar, Small, Hot) = RM6.50
Despite being called a "Small" this was a Large Cup. It had a Noticeably Milky Creamy Taste but I felt the Kopi Strength is Very Weak. For an Item proudly proclaimed as a "华阳三宝", I'm not impressed with this Kopi Quality.
I'm sorry but I feel that in terms of Kopi Strength, this Coffee is Below Average compared to even a Regular Kopi sold at our SG Kopitiam. There is Nothing Special at all about this.
501 华阳招牌酥皮蛋挞 Oriental Egg Tart (2 Pieces) = RM10.80
551 比利时巧克力蛋挞 Belgian Chocolate Egg Tart (2 Pieces) = RM12.80
Now THIS is Very Good. The Egg Tarts resemble Portuguese-Styled Variety with a Torched Caramelization on Top. They are Thick, Big Sized and Quite Heavy. Outer Crust is Super Delicate and Flaky. It had a Very 酥脆, Light and Flaky Bite Texture.
The Custardy Egg Filling was still Boiling Hot despite sitting for 12 mins. Not Overly Eggy, the Amount of Filling is Generous. It has a Creamy Buttery Melt in Mouth Texture that is Not Overly Sweet. Both the Super Flaky Crust and Creamy Hot Egg Filling worked together very well to make this a Good Egg Tart.
Belgian Chocolate Version has a Similar Taste Profile with a Slightly Darker Coloured Crust. There is a Small Layer of Confectionary Dark Chocolate Cream at the Bottom Layer. Not Super Sweet and while there is not alot of it, I thought they have just enough to give a Nice Chocolatey Hit to the Egg Tart.
502 华阳冰火菠萝包 Oriental Polo Bun = RM7.90 This took 12 Mins because they Forgot my Order and I had to remind them. This was quite Alarming because it wasn't Crowded at all that time.
The Dish itself is Uniquely Served "Deconstructed Style". Other than the Polo Bun itself, there are 2 Thick Slabs of Butter and a Small Vial of Sweet Condensed Milk. Very Unique Way of presenting a Polo Bun.
The Outer Crust of the Bun has a Nice Soft Crunch. It has a Delightful Biscuity Taste and is Slightly Sweet. The Inside is Plain Tasting, Soft and Fluffy.
Combination of the Biscuity Soft Crunch of the Outer Crust combined with the Soft Pillowy Bread mixed with the Light Creamy Soft Butter makes this a Winning Combo.
Adding Condensed gave a Solid Sweet Hit to the Already Creamy Soft Bun Mix and Greatly Enhances the Taste.
Conclusion and Closing Thoughts
At RM6.50 (S$2.00) for their Signature Oriental Kopi, I'd say don't bother. Not sure if I was unlucky that day or what, but the Kopi Strength was so Weak! How can this be considered as a "华阳三宝"? This tastes so Below Average.
At RM10.80 (S$3.30) for their Oriental Egg Tart and RM12.80 (S$3.90) for the Belgian Chocolate Variation, these are worth the price. The Super Light and Flaky Crust is really the Star of the Show and this is Comparable in Quality to the Ones I had in Macau. They do indeed taste Very Good. Eat these Fresh where possible and try not to Dapao.
At RM7.90 (S$2.50) for the Polo Bun, this was an Acceptable Price and I like its Customizability and it tastes good. My Concern is how they could Forget my Order even when it wasn't crowded when I ordered?
I can recommend this place, but it is not something I would queue hours for. If you really want to give Oriental Kopi a try, they have Multiple Branches all over JB where the Queue are not as insane as this Particular Branch in City Square.

Read moreBeen here a couple of times mostly for takeaways but this is the first time I actually sat inside for a meal. It's a challenge trying to come here early in the morning cause they open at 8 while the mall opens at 10. Used to enter via the office entrance this time round they opened another entrance facing Wong Ah Fook with signs so should be easier to navigate around. Wanted to try the limited edition Taro Polo so it was the main reason for the visit. So had to order it and also decided to get a Char Kwey Teow. Initially I didn't noticed that the dish was only available after 11am but I still went ahead to order. Later a staff came and told me it would be available after 930am. Since I had to wait for 30 minutes I decided to get the half boiled eggs as well. First the teh cincau was not bad. I had to ask the staff a few times because the item in the menu says teh cincau but the description says it has coffee. Had to make sure there was no coffee before ordering. The taro polo bun was not bad. The bun didn't have much flavours the taro paste they gave was quite generous. It was pretty smooth and not too sweet which was good. It was pretty enjoyable eating the polo bun with taro paste and the thick slab of butter. Then it was 930am so I asked the staff to start preparing the noodles. It only took 1 minute and the noodle was served already! I think they might have started cooking it a while before 930. Tasted pretty good actually, loaded with eggs which I liked. The noodles didn't really taste like Char Kwey Teow but it felt like it was a fusion of the dish and also Pad Thai. Not too bad of a dish and quite liked it as well. Portion was quite generous and feeling so full after the meal. In general they have pretty good dishes and prices are rather reasonable so its worth giving a try. Of course don't forget to ask about their Oriental treasures and give them a try! Also I think they have changed their operation hours to start at 8am...

And the place was filled but didn't have to wait long to get a table for 3. We were seated and given an order sheet to write down our order then pass it to the waiters/waitress. We've ordered several dishes to share which includes the Nanyang Curry Nasi Lemak, Chilli Ban Mian, Mee Siam, Curry Chee Cheong Fan and Oriental Egg Tart. As for drinks, Kopi O and Teh C Gincau Ice. The Nanyang Curry was absolutely delicious and incredibly fragrant and it has the spicy kick and the nasi lemak comes with peanuts, ikan bilis, eggs and cucumbers and the rice was cooked well and the sambal was absolutely amazing. The Ban Mian also came with a variety of dishes and it was delicious and the noodles were soft to the chew and the chilli was SEDAP. Curry Chee Cheong Fan could be better though, and for the Mee Siam it was not bad. The Oriental Egg Tart were amazing, very crispy and fragrant. Drinks were delicious as well. However, service can be improved as there was confusion on the order and we thought the waiter told us to remove the mee siam order because it had ran out but another waiter said that was not the case. And we had to reorder and wait.
We went for a walk and came back for round 2 and tried the Penang Char Kuay Teow and Rendang Nasi Lemak. Penang Char Kuay Teow was decent and had lots of dishes but the Rendang was damn delicious. We then proceed to get a few of their packaged stuff such as the Oriental Teh Tarik, Mocha, Chilli Ban Mian and Mala Chilli Ban Mian. Tried it few days later and it was good, will come...
