I arrived here about 10:10am and am thankful that it is not yet crowded. I have been passing by this stall soooo many times, making a mental note to try their kway teow soup, because the texture of kway teow is probably closest to the ones I tried at Swatow. Incidentally, their new premises is a lot more platable than their old venue.
I decided to go for the M$10 bowl for 2 reasons: In case it's not up to my liking The liver & kidneys are already high cholesterol. I didn't need a bigger bowl or add oysters. I also asked for the kway teow to be halved, to reduce the carbs intake. It seems like the lady chef has been getting such requests, and asked if I am trying to lose weight! She is quite jovial!
Verdict: I thoroughly enjoy this old school style of cooking. The liver was a tad overcooked, but the kidneys were en pointe. Absolutely fresh and delicious.....to the point I was tempted to order a bowl of kidney soup! The stock seems authentic because it is not salty and I didn't suffer from any MSG-attack.
When I finished, I thanked the lady chef and she was expressed if it was sufficient for me. I will come back here again....for just the soup. The next time, I'd order $20!! It's worth the...
Read moreHad this in the late morning when the Q was not too long, the bowl of goodness is the perfect meal for the morning. We had the dried chilli version and the soup kway teow option.
Dried version was well balanced in seasoning with just the right amount of heat from the chilli sauce.
As for the soup base kway teow, we felt it was a tad bland even for someone whom doesn’t really take a lot of salt in my meals. Still falvorsome but would be nicer if the soup was given more time to brew?!? Hahahaaha… nevertheless, it’s still a good bowl of wonderful meal as the pork and all the innards were well cook in tenderness and there wasn’t any bad taste for the intestines too!
Drinks were limited as we tot we could have coffee or tea but ended that they only serve grass jelly at that time.
Cut chillies are the regular ones so if it were chilli padis, maybe it will elevate the meal higher.
Still a worthy meal for a good...
Read moreAh Hua Kway Teow has been the signature food in Johor Bahru down town for many decades. Now is the 2nd and 3rd generation running the business.
They are famous for their abalone kuey teow soup, they are using Mexico Abalone. To add a slice of abalone is RM26 per pc, they also serving a package of 2 slices abalone with other ingredients at RM48 a bowl. We ordered the RM48, as it was using a special bowl, which is smaller, the soup was only warm but not hot enough for me. The taste of the soup was superb, mainly due to the base was already very nice, even without abalone.
It's located inside Restoran Sekee (old kopitiam with nice kopi & half boiled eggs). They are still using charcoal to cook their soup and running the business. Business hour 8am-2pm, the later you go the chances of running out of ingredients.
