Michelin Bib Gourmand Guide - how powerful the influence of this guide for a business. After being listed in the prestigious guide, the already busy Ah Hei got busier.
I've never thought and might never drive to downtown KL just to eat BKT if not for the family gathering. I'd rather head down to Klang because it suited my taste bud more.
◾Claypot Bah Kut Teh RM109 for XL size - the claypot was filled with all the meat cuts inside the boiling soup. ◾Braised Pork Belly RM45 (M) was rich with garlicky flavour. ◾Pork Stomach in White Pepper Soup RM25 (S) - soup was not peppery enough for me but the stomach cut was thick and good. ◾Veggie Claypot in BKT Soup RM23 (M) containing enoki mushroom, button mushroom and beancurd skin - they separated the vegetable so that they can make extra from this. ◾Stir Fried Iceberg Lettuce with garlic RM25 - best to consume while it's hot. ◾You Tiao at RM3.50 per bowl. ◾Beancurd cube (Taufu pok) RM5.00 per bowl.
As expected, the BKT soup lacked the power and herbal taste that I'm looking for in my BKT. This is what some would say "KL style" bah kut Teh that appeals to many old timers.
Note: First time refill is free and subsequent refill will be charged RM5 - RM10 per refill. Various Claypot sizes from S to XL are available...
Read moreI have been to this restaurant many times over the years, way before it won a Michelin award. I am happy to see that it is very nicely renovated now, however not happy with some other aspects. For starters, there is a minimum order of RM25 per person. There is a small print on the menu stating that. After we made our order and waited for a while, the waiter came back to tell us that we didn't meet the minimum order amount so we had to order more. I really dislike such a rule. I know that it is common in some other countries but to have it in a previously normal restaurant with common food is not something I favour. Also, there is only 1 free refill of the soup, additional charge for more refills. Service was very slow even though place wasn't entirely full at breakfast time. Food took very long to arrive, a simple breakfast took more than an hour when we could've been done in half that time. Lastly, I felt the BKT was good but not outstanding anymore. I remember the 1st time I had it that I really thought it was excellent, but now it seems like it tastes just like any other BKT places. It is sad to see a place not retaining its charm after winning an award and upgraded itself. I would've much preferred the old style open air shop with its...
Read moreAh Hei Bakuteh is located right next to the popular Sun Foong Bakuteh, and I noticed that it’s a Michelin-recommended spot.
I arrived around 9 a.m. and didn’t need to queue. Due to limited seating, sharing tables with strangers is common here. The restaurant is clean and bright, with the fragrant aroma of bakuteh soup filling the air.
Their bakuteh is served in a claypot, combining different cuts of pork. You can also request specific additions like pork belly and intestines to customize your dish.
Typically, bakuteh is served with oil rice topped with fried shallots, but here they only offer plain white rice, which I felt was a slight drawback. The soup has a strong Chinese herbal flavor with a noticeable sweetness and tastes quite good. However, the pork and pork belly weren’t cooked long enough, making the meat quite chewy and tough to bite. The fried you tiao pairs well with the bakuteh soup. Service is attentive; the staff refills the soup in your claypot without needing to ask, which is a nice touch.
Overall, it’s a decent bakuteh experience with good service. Parking is limited, so be prepared to park a bit farther away and walk to...
