Elegant Inn serves v old school Cantonese cuisine bringing old recipes alive. To me a taste of childhood 2.0. Most dishes are made from scratch, with specific attention to the ingredients sourced.

Soups are all double boiled individually by pots, best to pre-order your favourites, and i luuurrrv all their prawn paste dishes, using only Kap Shui Mun (aka Ma Wan HK) prawn paste which is alot more subtle and refined in taste. Going great lengths in sourcing great ingredients VS unusual ingredients is a world apart.

Their Hong Kong Waxmeat Claypot Rice is not to be missed. Am a bit of a fusspot when it comes to waxmeat (ok not only waxmeat ), normally I’d only have them in Hong Kong at very specific places. Elegant Inn uses goose liver sausages from Yung Kee HK, for that itself I can come multiple times.

Their CNY menu is more of a merrymaking of east meets west. We opted for the full upgrade. Best choice ever ! Accompaniments of Yee Sang all made in house, not a drop of food dye in sight. Lobster dish is a trip of umami fantasy, topped with morel mushrooms, tantalising aroma permeates all around in the delicious sweet and succulent meat ! Just amazing! Olive Pork (from olive-fed pig) is a shining star! Plump, bouncy and flavourful, defo one of the best porks ever! Foie gras caramelised in a VERY crispy and light crust that resembles the finest wafers. Hazelnut cookies had us wanting more we even order extra to takeaway. I must say their approach towards elements prominent in western cuisine, as well as their pan frying skills easily gives many top western restaurants a run for its money too. I never liked Cantonese Sponge Cake (Ma Lai Gou), their pan fried version has me totally hooked.

Going again next...

Best Hong Kong-Cantonese claypot rice. We enjoyed the fish claypot rice very much, it takes 30 minutes to prepare with care. This style is not suitable for Malaysia-Cantonese because Malaysian style feature lots of dark soy sauce, it’s two different schools even though it’s the same dish.

As the name suggest, Elegant Inn feature rather elegant flavours and their dishes are not heavily covered in soy sauce. The stuffed chicken wings were well flavoured and nicely textured with chopped chestnut, we ate it without any sauce because any sauce we try would ruin the balance of flavours.

The salted fried patties are also well adjusted to pair well with rice. Service by the waiter is top notch, he made sure to come refill our tea and change plates as needed. All was done courteously. They have different captains on floor who weren’t too amicable but we are fine with the good service from the waiter.

Price is on the high side because they took much care to prepare. We were told that they rotate the claypot every 5minutes or so to achieve an even cooking of rice, including making sure there is a layer or nicely burnt rice. It’s a dish that we come back for.

Perhaps the only down side is that the selections and quality of tea is rather average. It would be a much better meal if a good...

Late in the evening, on a Chinese New Year weekend, I was seized with a craving for tang yuan. The places specializing in tang sui and tang yuan were too far away due to horrendous traffic for the holiday weekend, and probably for the same reason, no Grab deliveries were available from these places. I noted Elegant Inn Hong Kong Cuisine restaurant was 5-10 minute walk from my accomodations and figured they would have some kind of tang yuan. Even though it was close to closing time, I was greeted warmly and seated right away. Although they had a number of very delicious sounding desserts, I asked with some dismay and hopelessness about a simple red bean soup, even though it wasn't on the menu. The waitstaff said they ask the kitchen. a short time later a lovely, delicious bowl of red bean soup appeared with 2 absolutely perfect looking, tasting, and textured sesame glutinous balls. Just delightful with a cup of hot tea. Even though it was late, at the end of a hectic holiday weekend, and my order was probably the smallest they've ever gotten, the service was welcoming, kind, efficient and completely charming, as was the atmosphere. If the rest of the menu is anything like this simple dish which can be so elevated, I can see why they are...

The place to go for good Cantonese Cuisine. We ordered:- 1) Double boiled soup with chicken, pig's stomach, "jin hua" ham and lots of other ingredients. - Flavourful and a good start to a good meal. 2) Stir fried Miyazaki beef with garlic - chef was able to bring out the good flavour of this good piece of meat. Texture was good and "no over cooking". 3) Crispy chicken skin with minced shrimp - crispiness without the greasiness must eat it it while is hot. We could taste the effort put in to cook this dish to perfection. 4) Claypot rice with fish and pickled vegetable - "gouba" (crust of scorched rice) the was highlight to me. Overall a good dish to finish the main course. 5) Golden custard cake - it's so simple and yet so divine. The combination of the texture of the cake, saltiness , sweetness and the fragrant were just so to the "point", so well balanced. 6) Almond cream with hashima - first spoonful wasn't all that pleasant because of the strong almost but it grew on me. The creaminess and the smooth texture of this dessert was a great way to end the meal. The good:- Good food and the sequence and timing of the dishes served were well paced. The bad:- Lack experienced staff. The "captain" recommended good dishes but the servers need more training.

Located in Level 1 of Menara Hap Seng 1, this very refined restaurant, maintains a relaxed atmosphere, creating an inviting and cozy place to dine. Dim Sum is served during lunch time, minus the chaos and din. Service is great. All staff are well trained and attentive. We had Dim Sum for lunch, and among the dishes that we really enjoyed were; Shanghai Dumpling (XiaoLongPao) – each bite was like a bite of Heaven, with the delicate wrapper hiding treasures of savoury fillings - finely chopped meat and soup bursting with flavour. The tangy dip of vinegar and ginger adds to the zest! EI Crispy Vegetable Roll – We only ordered this dish as we thought we needed one more dish to complete the lunch. The rice rolls with it silky texture combined beautifully with the shredded jicama and vegetable fillings and one other filling that aced the dish, a crunchy, probably deep-fried ingredient which we cannot make out. Sitting in mild sweet-salty sauce, the combination was truly extraordinary to the last bite! All the other dishes we ordered (Char Siew Pow, Fried Radish Cake, 5 Spices Chives and Pork and dessert), did not disappoint and was good. The next time we have a Dim Sum craving, this would be the place to go. Plus to try out their ala carte menu.
