Read moreI'm giving this review based on the few elements I'm looking for in a nasi lemak. The one star cut is due to the chicken.
I think nasi lemak burung hantu has made quite an impression in the nasi lemak world. This is my first time trying it.
First of all I'm impressed with the basmati rice that is cooked very nicely with coconut milk and lots of gingers and onions. The rice is fluffy, aromatic and I really love the subtle gingery note. Next the sambal, it's spicy, but not to the extent of burning your throat and stomach, has a sweet note to it too. The spices are well balanced. And lastly the fresh anchovies and cucumber.
Now the chicken. The chicken has been marinated with some rempah (spices), the spices are fragrant and flavourful. But somehow the marinate didn't reach the entire thickness of the drumstick and chicken thigh. The taste are all superficial, and towards the bone, there is strong chicken odor still present. I'd love it more if it's tender and juicy.
Overall, the ambiance was okay indoor (equipped with air conditioning), price is reasonable. Food was above average.
** PS I was a solo traveler that day, and I found that the entire ordering system was not very friendly to a solo diner. First you need to get yourself a seat. Then you order, the food is supposed to be delivered to your table. But as a solo traveler, the moment I got up to order, my seat was already taken by another person. So I would prefer a QR ordering system on the table itself. Just my...
Read moreReally good nasi lemak with a nice atmosphere.
I paid around RM40 for 2 nasi lemak with chicken and two teh o ice. Some might say it’s expensive for nasi lemak but there is AC and a nice place to sit with comfortable chairs so I say it’s worth it.
The food is delicious, they use basmati rice which is super fluffy and light. The sambal is sweet and spicy, they also give a generous portion of crispy anchovies and peanuts and they use Japanese cucumbers which taste better. So over all a very nice nasi lemak.
Okay so the things that in my opinion need improving is:
The sambal amount is too small and to get another one you have to queue again and pay 2 ringgit.
The forks and spoons are given mammak style in an open container so every one who sat might have touched the spoon that you’re about to put in your mouth. People cough and sneeze so it’s better to serve forks and spoons individually per customer. That’s why I prefer to just eat with my hand when I see an open container of spoons and forks on the table.
The sink to wash your hand is a portable one. You have to pump the water with you feet to wash your hands. I think they should have a normal sink.
The tissues at the table are the cheap kind you try to pull one and you’re surprised that they’re all stuck together and you’re about to pull the whole bunch. “Get better tissues”
But all in all, very nice nasi lemak. I would definitely come back again....
