NZ Curry House is one of those places in Kuala Lumpur that truly reflects the vibrant food culture of Malaysia. Situated in a prime location and open almost around the clock, it has become a favorite hangout spot not only for locals but also for tourists and expatriates. Whether you are looking for a quick breakfast, a hearty lunch, or a late-night meal, this restaurant always seems ready to serve.
What immediately stands out is the wide variety on the menu. From traditional Malaysian favorites like nasi lemak, roti canai, and mee goreng, to South Asian curries, biryani, and tandoori dishes, the selection is extensive. The roti canai is one of their specialties – crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and always served hot with flavorful dhal or curry. Their nasi lemak is another must-try, fragrant with coconut milk rice and paired with spicy sambal, crunchy peanuts, and fried anchovies. For those who enjoy Indian flavors, the chicken curry and mutton curry are rich, aromatic, and cooked to perfection.
The atmosphere is casual and bustling, exactly what you would expect from a mamak-style eatery. The place is usually busy, especially during late evenings, but the service is surprisingly quick. Staff members are attentive, friendly, and efficient in managing the crowd. Even during peak hours, food arrives at the table within minutes, which is a big plus.
One of the unique aspects of NZ Curry House is its late-night and 24-hour availability at certain branches. For night owls, students, and people coming back from work or events, this makes it a reliable choice. Sitting with a glass of teh tarik – their frothy, creamy pulled tea – while chatting with friends or simply watching the city’s nightlife pass by is an experience in itself.
In terms of pricing, NZ Curry House offers great value for money. The portions are generous, and most items are very affordable compared to restaurants in nearby commercial areas. A meal for two with drinks often costs less than what you’d expect for the quality and quantity served.
The cleanliness and overall upkeep of the restaurant are reasonably well-maintained given the high customer flow. Tables are cleared quickly, and hygiene is acceptable for a busy mamak spot. Parking can sometimes be a challenge depending on the branch you visit, but the food and experience usually make up for it.
Overall, NZ Curry House is more than just a restaurant – it’s a cultural experience. It’s a place where people from all walks of life come together to enjoy comfort food, casual conversations, and the true taste of Malaysian hospitality. If you’re in Kuala Lumpur and want to experience authentic mamak-style dining with a wide choice of curries and Malaysian staples, NZ Curry House is a must-visit. This place was recommended by a young man who said the food is good, as long as you don’t mind local fare with a bit of spice. I do like spicy, authentic local food, so I went in with an open mind and reasonable expectations. Unfortunately, the experience quickly went downhill.
From the start, the service was problematic. The server pulled a fast one on us - bringing food we clearly didn’t order, specifically sardine paratha, and then insisting we had. Who orders sardine paratha, really? It’s not even a common dish. Then, he brought more drink orders than there were people at the table and doubled down, claiming again that we had asked for them. There was no attempt to verify or apologise - just insistence and a dismissive attitude.
The overall demeanor was rude and disinterested. No warmth, no accountability, just a sense of obligation to get through the shift. That alone would have soured the meal, but the environment didn’t help either. The place wasn’t the cleanest - tables sticky, floor in need of a sweep, general lack of upkeep. It felt neglected.
That said, the curry itself was decent. Flavors were there, and it had a good level of heat. But one decent dish can’t make up for poor service, questionable ethics at the table, and a less-than-ideal setting.
Final verdict, 1 star. The food was passable, and I did walk away without any gastrointestinal issues, which, under the circumstances, feels like a minor victory. But I won’t be going...
Read moreNZ Curry House at KLCC is a true gem for anyone craving authentic Indian food in Kuala Lumpur. This spot quickly became my favorite for both breakfast and lunch because of its inviting atmosphere and mouthwatering dishes. The highlight has to be the dosai—the regular dosai and the onion tava dosai are simply exceptional. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and perfectly paired with chutneys and sambar, they capture the essence of South Indian flavors brilliantly. Every bite felt like a taste of home. The service was another standout feature. Being served by the warm and friendly Tamil-speaking staff made the experience even more special and personal, like visiting a local family eatery rather than just a restaurant.
