Chakri Palace can be considered one of the earliest premium Thai restaurants to have graced the restaurant scene in KL. It has since firmly established itself as the go-to place for authentic Thai food at a price. But is it really deserving of its legacy in Malaysia?
Well, a little bit of yes and a whole lot of no.
Let's start with the drinks. They are expensively priced but less than good if I may be at my most polite. Watered down soursop with nary a hint of guava unlike it's namesake.
As for the food...
The red Tom Yum was served in a nondescript bowl that would remind you of the bowl that you use at home to hold your soup. Zero effort from a restaurant with a bonafide reputation. The soup itself was just salty with an excess amount of fish sauce. Worse, the prawns that came with it were not fresh at all.
The stir fry vegetables dish was on the other end of the spectrum - subtly flavorful. I guess it was their way to balance out our palate. How considerate.
I did not get to eat the fish cake as I wanted to give my portion to my nephew. Through my family's reaction, it was just ok. Nothing spectacular.
The glass noodle salad was just sweet and lacked that zesty and refreshing taste that one would expect of a Thai salad.
The deep fried sotong in a thing layer of batter was acceptable. Not totally flavorful but went well with the Thai chili sauce of the supermarket kind.
To save the best for last, the steamed fish with lime was the saving grace. Perfectly steamed in a pool of flavorful but sourish soup. This was the only dish that made me order a second helping of rice.
Last not but least, the quintessential mango sticky rice to finish off the dinner. It was within expectation and I like the slightly salty taste of the coconut cream that balances out the sweetness of the mangoes. Another dish worthy of your attention.
It was a treat from my younger brother and the whole thing cost a whopping RM498. Not all are fine with Chakri Palace but they are some worthy dishes if you know where to start. The problem is which ones...
Read moreI visited Imperial Chakri Palace KLCC for lunch with my family and we were impressed by the quality and variety of the Thai food. The restaurant is located on the fourth level of Suria KLCC, a popular shopping mall in Kuala Lumpur. The restaurant has a spacious and elegant interior, with a VIP room for private events. The staff were friendly and attentive, and the service was fast and efficient.
The menu offers a wide range of dishes, from appetizers, salads, soups, curries, noodles, rice, seafood, meat, vegetables, desserts, and beverages. The food is prepared with fresh organic ingredients, low cholesterol cooking oil, and no MSG or artificial preservatives. The restaurant also has a halal certification from Jakim, which means that the food is lawful and permissible for Muslims to consume. The restaurant follows the Islamic principles of slaughtering, cleansing, and processing the food in the name of God.
We ordered the tom yam soup, the green curry chicken, the pineapple fried rice, the crispy fish with mango salad, and the mango sticky rice for dessert. The portions were generous and the prices were reasonable. The food was delicious and flavorful, with a balance of spicy, sour, sweet, and salty tastes. The tom yam soup was rich and aromatic, with a hint of lemongrass and lime. The green curry chicken was creamy and tender, with a touch of basil and coconut milk. The pineapple fried rice was fragrant and colorful, with chunks of pineapple, cashew nuts, and raisins. The crispy fish with mango salad was crunchy and refreshing, with a tangy dressing of lime juice and fish sauce. The mango sticky rice was sweet and satisfying, with ripe mango slices and coconut cream.
