On one hand you have places like Shake Shack and Five Guys, popular US burger outlets that have opened local branches. On the other hand, we have no shortage of home-grown burger joints that serve very good and very creative burgers. So, do places like Shake Shack hold an advantage over our local offerings?

I decided to try the smoke shack as it was recommended by quite a few other reviewers and the promise of applewood-smoked bacon certainly appealed to me. I also ordered one of their famous shakes. I went for their regular sized salted caramel classic shakes. No fries because at over RM10, I felt like they were way too overpriced.

First, the burger. I liked the patty. Good quality minced beef with a nice overall sear. According to the description, the patties are supposed to be cooked medium by default but mine was more like well done. Anyways, I still enjoyed mine so no points taken off there. The cheese was nicely melted as well.

The smoked beef bacon was alright but there's only so much you can do with beef. I still miss my bona fide bacon. Sorry, Shake Shack.

The pickles, I'm not that big a fan of. I think I still prefer the plain vanilla dill or gherkin.

Buns were nice and soft. No complaints there.

Portion wise, the Smoke Shake is a lot smaller than a Five Guys burger but then it is quite a bit cheaper as well. Also, because I can't get greedy and go with all the toppings like I can with Five Guys, the resulting burger looks more presentable. However, when compared with local joints, I can often get bigger portions and more toppings at the same price point.

I liked the shake a lot although I must admit that I should have just gone for the small size. The small cup looked really tiny at the counter so I got a little greedy but the shake was really, really thick so I got full real fast. Thankfully I decided to forego the fries.

Service wise, despite the nice setting, it is still very much a fast food joint. That means queuing up to order and then picking up your food from the counter in your own. So yes, self service but at gourmet burger prices.

Nice decor overall but with fast food furnishing. What do I mean by that? The atmosphere is very nice but the furniture is dinky. Tiny unstable tables and chairs that are not very comfortable. They really don't want you to hang around for too long.

In conclusion, I would say if you are going for value for money, our top local joints still hold an edge. It is certainly still worth a try and in some ways, better than Five Guys. It is definitely cheaper and the environment...

We had to queue in front of the restaurant. But the staff who handled the queue didn't inform the customers who were queuing that customers have to get a table inside first. No communication at all. Once we reached inside, another staff who's taking the order asked for our table and we had no idea that we had to get a table first after all the queuing. And you know what the staff suggested? For us to just take-away our food. As if there's no more tables (but people come and go so technically we could've get a table not long after that and yes we proceeded to order and we got a table just few minutes after that). Dia macam menghalau customers after customers penat-penat queuing tau. After what happened to us, they still didn't inform the customers behind us that they also have to get a table first but the customers behind who saw what happened to us just pandai-pandai find a table by themselves. No communication to those waiting outside.

They also didn't inform to the customers queuing that their strawberry lemonade was unavailable. Didn't mark it or put notice anywhere too. You'd only know something is unavailable upon reaching the counter to place your order. Apa function ada staff jaga queue kat dalam tah? And when I asked when it'll be available, they had no idea although it's their own store — they should've known their inventory what?

Only the shackburger was edible. We ordered few burgers. Didn't like the shroom & smokeshack — just NOPE! The burgers are incomparable to other existing burger joints in Malaysia already despite the uncompetitive prices. The size of the burgers are small (or maybe some people consider it regular size). The fifty-fifty drink was TERRIBLE! Please learn how to make drinks from Supamala. The fries also just so-so and it's the type yang hancur when you touch. That RM16.50 cheese fries memang biasa-biasa je to be priced at RM16.50. Also incomparable to other existing fries shops in Malaysia. Besides that, there're no set meals too.

It makes me wonder how long will this restaurant survive if they continue to be incompetent like this.

Dining at the first Shake Shack branch in Malaysia, located within the iconic tallest landmark in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, is a vibrant and exciting experience. The bustling energy of KL’s landmark adds to the anticipation and thrill of visiting this renowned international chain.

The experience begins with the unique ordering process, where you select from a menu that includes both classic Shake Shack items and exclusive local offerings. This time, the choice fell on some of the atypical items: the signature 50-50 drink (a refreshing blend of strawberry lemonade and tea), vanilla frozen custard, and criss-cut fries.

The 50-50 drink is a standout, with its perfectly balanced mix of sweet strawberry lemonade and the subtle, earthy notes of tea, providing a refreshing and invigorating taste. The frozen vanilla custard is creamy and rich, embodying Shake Shack’s commitment to quality and flavor. The criss-cut fries, with their crispy exterior and soft interior, offer the perfect savory complement.

An unexpected delight was discovering how well these items work together in various combinations. Mixing the smooth, rich custard with the tangy, sweet lemonade created a surprising and delicious fusion of flavors. This playful experimentation made the meal more enjoyable and memorable.

The lively atmosphere, combined with the stunning view of the city’s skyline, enhances the dining experience. The staff are friendly and efficient, ensuring a...
