I’m going to be brutally honest- this place is 5⭐️ ONLY for the food. Read on to find out my caveat 😵💫!
I came across Ole Sayang while walking to Dataran Pahlawan. While it looked very unassuming from the outside, I took a peep into the windows and saw that it was a FULL house! Every table was seated, and the whole restaurant was so busy. Mind you- this was a regular weekday night, not like a special occassion or public holiday!
So immediately, I made a mental note to try.
Pros: Food is very yummy. I tried their assam prawns, ikan bawal, chicken rendang, sambal sotong, otah, chap chye, and itik tim (salted veg duck soup). Everything was fantastic! The fish was fried to perfection, coated in a sweet sauce, and the meat was so juicy and succulent! Must try! The chicken rendang’s sauce was lovely as well- they were super generous with it. Full of fragrant, you can taste the rempah it was made with. My ❤️😍 favourite, was the assam prawn. The sauce was liquid gold, sweet and sour with that strong assam taste coming through. Super moreish- I think I had like 7/8 of them? Sambal sotong was also very delicious- their sambal is more fragrant than spicy, so it’s good for people who cannot take too much spice.
They give you keropok and peanuts to eat while waiting for your food.
I found the serving quite generous.
Free wifi.
Cons: We had to wait about an hour for our food. If you’re very hungry, or with children, or with hangry adults, this might not be the spot for you.
The restaurant had poor service (to be completely honest). You had to walk in, choose your own seat (there’s no front of house here). You then have to ask for a menu, and then wave multiple times for your order to be taken. The restaurant is under-staffed, and the waitresses who are old aunties are stretched thin. I personally would tolerate the poor service, since the manpower crunch is understandable and the food is good enough to make up for it!
Buah keluak wasn’t available when we visited which is so sad :(! But the other dishes were lovely so can’t complain!
Conclusion:
Go here if you’re looking for no-frills Nyonya food. The food served here is very good, and I would bring friends and family here again. I overheard another table say it’s the best nyonya food they have had in malacca! If you’re the kind who cannot wait very long for food, or gets frustrated when you’re not treated like a king, then don’t come here. Personally, I loved this restaurant and would say it was a...
Read moreStandards have dropped a lot. Poor service. If i could rate 0 stars I would. Never coming back, advising friends who were customers to not as well.
Food took very long to come (1.5h) in spite of the restaurant being less than half full. We checked for our food at about 30mins in, they said it was coming soon, 1h in they said it was coming soon, 1h 20mins in we did not want to wait any longer as we were starving and they had yet to make our order (they said ours was next after a table) so we suggested to pay for our drinks and leave. Cashier refused to let us pay, ignoring us. The waitresses also ignored us when we wanted to check for our order. On top of that, one waitress told us the food was served on a “first-come-first-serve” basis, but this was not the case. A table who came about 30mins after us was served much earlier than us. They should be ashamed of such dishonesty. At least don’t make it so blatantly obvious and lie to a customer’s face, and have the decency to advise customers if the food is going to take a long time to come.
They only had a single chef in the kitchen, would recommend to hire more, especially at the slow speed they take to cook and serve the food. Seems that many other tables were complaining about long duration it took to get their...
Read moreWe pass by this shop and saw the crowd. Decided to give it a try.
In my personal opinion. Food was awful, staff was very rude and kind of dishonest. Overall ambiance is okay.
We ordered Otak-Otak, Assam Fish, Black Pepper beef, Chap Chai, omelette.
Otak-Otak has too much coconut milk in it and the colour does looks appealing. The only food we found okay was the omelette and chap chai but it was only okay. Nothing fantastic.
When we were ordering the Assam Fish. We ask for a rough estimation how much it will cost as it was stated as market rate on the menu. We understand that seafood prices does fluctuate. The rude waitress which Malay lady said she need to check with the kitchen. We ask her to get back to us after checking. She’s reluctant to do so. We request to know the price and she immediately say it’s RM48.
We were like puzzled. How come she suddenly has the pricing without checking with the kitchen. We said okay to have the Assam fish. She said in Hokkien that it will be Ang Zhor (Golden Snapper).
Turned out that the fish is not what she mentioned and it was pre-fried before cooking in Assam. Not fresh, not authentic and dishonest selling.
We chat with a few diners outside the shop after our dinner. None of us thinks that the...
