I visited this restaurant with my family recently, and sadly the experience left a very negative impression on me. From the moment we arrived, the owner’s attitude felt cold — no greeting, no smile, and when we asked where the bathroom was located, she just pointed with her hand without saying anything. It immediately set the wrong tone and gave us bad vibes.
What disturbed me most was her remark when we asked her for some recommendations from the menu - she replied by saying, “Maybe you want Indian food - we don’t serve that here.” As someone who has lived in Singapore for over a decade and traveled to many places in Asia, it was disturbing, disappointing and extremely unnecessary to have such an experience for the first time, where an assumption based on our ethnicity was made. We weren’t there for Indian food, we came to try the local food there like everyone else.
This type of stereotyping based on race is unacceptable. A restaurant owner should be able to treat all guests with basic respect and warmth, regardless of background.
After seeing how she later replied to another member of our group on Google (“lucky I didn’t make your S$10”), I was further disappointed. Instead of reflecting on the feedback, she dismissed it with sarcasm, which reinforces her lack of professionalism and unwillingness to listen to genuine concerns.
Edit: The sarcasm in the response from the owner is so unnecessary. You can try to learn and accept from others feedback and improve instead of retorting in this way. Wish you all the best. Hope you learn to treat your customers better than how...
Read moreWe were initially excited to try this place due to the good reviews, but we were so shocked by the racist treatment of the lady at this cafe. We were a group of 6 people, travelling with family. She was so rude to us right from the start, and she did not welcome us or return our smiles when we entered the cafe. When we asked her for recommendations, she rudely responded I don’t know what you guys like, maybe you want Indian food, we don’t serve that here. That was unacceptable to us, as if we wanted Indian food, we wouldn’t go to a local vegan cafe. We told her that is very rude, and got up to leave the place. Her response was there is an Indian restaurant right across the road. I would not recommend this place to anyone unless you are ok with racists. Other reviews seemed to call her a nice and loving lady, maybe she was...
Read moreTo enjoy Fren's, you imagine visiting your friend's house for a meal and yarn. A place to make yourself at home. Three resident dogs (3) included! And they are quite happy to make friends with you.
The sambal tofu hit all the right notes, the wild ginger flower balanced the heat with its fragrance. Cautionary note here is to disclose your heat tolerance. Your adventure taste bud may not rise to the occasion!
There are limited seating and it's by design rather than a limitation, to cultivate a homely setting. At times, menu items are disrupted by her supplier, a special need center. But Fren makes sure you get a good option after listening to your taste preference.
There are plenty of reading material and artefacts to pique...
