The picturesque fishing village of Marsaxlokk is well known for its luzzu and other small boats in vibrant colours, for its larger than life Sunday market and for its numerous seafood restaurants found all over the village's seafront. Situated in the core of the village, it is no surprise that Terrone appeals to seafood lovers, yet diners should not be mistaken as Terrone is not the typical Marsaxlokk seafood place. Terrone is a strange name for a restaurant. The term is derived from the Italian language used by northerners as derogatory to label southerners. It is formed from the word 'terra', meaning land, and historically it was used to describe Sicilian landlords, highlighting the fact they profited from the land without doing any work. And perhaps the chef patron's inspiration from southern Italy's cuisine and his passion for fresh, organic, handpicked produce contributed towards this choice of name. I have no idea how many times I have dined at Terrone and this review is well overdue. Terrone combines rustic charm with modern cuisine and offers dishes with authentic, fresh and seasonal ingredients only. Hence the menu changes everyday which is a good thing as I always have something new to look forward to when I visit. At Terrone, you have the option to choose between dining al fresco or indoors but if the weather permits I would always suggest a table on the terrace and with some luck you could also enjoy the beautiful colours of the Marsaxlokk sunset. Irrespective whether I am in a party of two or part of a large group, I always enjoy the dining experience offered at Terrone. I prefer to order various dishes off the sharing plates section of the menu as that gives me the opportunity to try more different tastes and textures and many times I do the same thing with the pasta dishes too. On the last visit, my wife and I shared the chargrilled octopus with anchovy and rosemary sauce and fregola salad, the deep fried cuttlefish with fresh chilli, coriander and onions agro dolce as well as the perfectly prepared yellowfin tuna tartare with shallots, capers, parsley, chilli and lemon. Following the starters we ordered spaghetti with fresh, local sardines, golden raisins, pine nuts, capers, wild fennel and pangrattato and handmade ravioli stuffed with buffalo ricotta cheese and marjoram with slow-cooked merinda and datterini tomatoes. All the food was perfectly seasoned and tasted amazing. We could not eat more and therefore we did not order any of the mains that included various options of seafood, local pork, veal or beef. However, in general, dinner at Terrone is not complete without having one of their mouth-watering sweets on offer and this time I ordered the almond and apricot tart which was equally delicious as the amaretto pannacotta I had on my previous visit. At Terrone, carefully selected wines from the best wines available locally, in southern Italy, Sicily and Sardegna complement their cuisine. My choice was a smooth southern Italy white, Varvaglione 12 e Mezzo Malvasia del Salento, which was rich in fruit and accompanied the seafood brilliantly. Besides opening daily for lunch and dinner, during week-ends Terrone are also open for breakfast where they serve various healthy options as well as their take on baked eggs. The eggs benedict on toasted local ftira and scrambled eggs with cherry-smoked trout are my favourite. Both are, however, best accompanied with extra dry Italian Pro Secco. Staff at Terrone are super friendly, attentive and efficient, thus completing the whole dining package. I would recommend Terrone to anyone but I would also advise to look beyond price as you are paying for an experience which you'll want to seek out again.

We had a very relaxing and romantic evening at Terrone, located on Birgu. The entire a la carte menu looks delicious, but we opted for their ‘Mare’ Tasting menu for €65 (optional wine pairing is €35) which is entirely seafood. They also offer a ‘Terra’ tasting menu which is meat only. The food was exceptional and very fresh. We enjoyed a Gillardeau Oyster each with Royal Belgian caviar, followed by mouth-watering slices of Wild Kingfish Crudo topped with caviar. After a bowl of sea-salty mixed seafood, we followed with a portion of creamy risotto with monkfish and scallop in a shellfish bisque. The risotto was utterly glorious and a highlight of the meal (that and the crudo). Afterwards - and with each course nicely paced - we enjoyed a seafood mixed grill, with beautifully fresh swordfish and octopus on a bed of lentils and courgette (zucchini) ribbons, and garnished with a large prawn. Pudding was a sharp and tangy Maltese lemon meringue pie, which did not disappoint. For wines, I enjoyed a Maltese vermentino - high acidity with dominant pineapple flavours, and a superb Louis Moreau Chablis with sweet lemon aromas, and honey, candied lemon and yellow apple on the palate, both went brilliantly with the dishes. The restaurant and its location is very peaceful, with water gently lapping against the boats moored in front of the tables. The staff and service was excellent service and it was a memorable evening.

After always hearing good things about this restaurant, we decided to dine as a group to celebrate a friend. First and foremost, the menu provided consists of a computer-printed sheet of paper, the prices immediately seem high, and there's even a disclaimer about the pasta dishes stating that the portions are approx. 70g and not sufficient as a main meal. However, the prices range from 14 to 30 euros. The 30 euro risotto, besides being of average quality, was really small, something I've never seen even in tourist destinations like Ibiza, Capri, Portofino, etc (unfortunately I didn’t take a picture). The fritto misto was good, but the 36 euro seafood mix was also nothing special and quite meager (attached photo). The staff doesn't provide an experience and service worthy of the money spent (100 euros), there's no support in choosing wines (we got a very good French white wine but limited selection) and guiding the customer in explaining and selecting the dishes... Furthermore, at 10:30 PM, the staff was getting ready to close when the restaurant was still quite full, which is unheard of in August (peak tourist season)... Not even a gesture to offer a round of digestifs considering the total amount spent and the birthday celebration. Yet another demonstration that in Malta, in general, prices have skyrocketed without guaranteeing quality. Spending 100 euros is not an issue, but the problem lies in providing quality service. I understand that occasional underperformance can happen, but based on the above description, I do not recommend it and do not intend to return (I live in Malta)

After many visits to the old location I'm so glad to add the new Birgu location to my list. I will be back for sure. The food kept inline with prior experiences and the head waiter knew what he was doing. I wish I could say the same for the remainder of the service. Service was slightly on the slow side to be seen too and the wine had to be poured our selfs, food service between starter and main course was a bit quick. We where told there was a 2 hour limit on the table for some reason? I don't believe I ever heard that at the other location and surely don't expect similar from this place. We have come for the evening and not just to eat... Luckily we whernt asked to leave but something to keep in mind. Not exactly a deal breaker but I would like to see this improved on my next visit! Aside from that lovely meal and definitely one to visit on the island.

Lovely owner and great food We were tired and hungry after a long walk to and from St Peter's Pool and we needed to get some energy for the remaining afternoon activities. We stumbled up Terrone because it looked relaxed and coming to the end of the busier lunch period, so we would get served food a bit quicker. The owner was great and the servers were attentive. The food is fresh and cooked to order, so it is not as quick by U.K. standards - which I liked since attitudes to food and dining are so much healthier in the Mediterranean. I could not fault the food, and even after eating bread and pasta I still managed to fit in a cake. I recommend any seafood dish and the cakes are also made fresh and displayed until they're gone. Fast!

Good restaurant- worth a visit but choose dishes carefully. Service is very friendly & helpful but can be a bit slow (Went for lunch and it wasn’t particularly busy) The blue swimmer crab dish was fantastic. Worth the effort to slowly crack the shell and enjoy the delicious crab meat. Sauce is also delicious. The grilled octopus I didn’t enjoy. It seemed slimy and the bed of purée underneath didn’t help. Was cooked nicely but a bit rubbery. Can’t recommend this dish at all. The twice cooked potatoes should have been nice and crispy but they were soft and oily sadly. The Maltese sparkling wine is fantastic as was the San Niklaw wine. All is all, definitely worth a visit but choose your dishes carefully.
