Sometimes you pick a restaurant without first researching it. We needed something open late.
The alcohol menu was extensive but a majority of the cocktails were lemon-based. Nothing very interesting.
Service was attentive. I believe there were English speakers there. It's not that I don't enjoy trying to communicate in Spanish but it was very difficult. I think that excellent service would it have appreciated be difficulty and tried to accommodate. It's not like we weren't able to get through our meal but communication barriers limited our understanding of you when you and although I said food that was no picante, the specific dish that needed to be without any hot spices came with hot spices.
I would say this is a bar and not specifically a good restaurant. The fish balls were okay but extremely expensive and with a very small portion. Not particularly great but basic.
I ordered the oxtail. It was crazy. Basically was almost like a soup that had the water strain from it. It was served with no noodles or bread or anything. It was the weirdest dish. Not that it was bad but by itself, it made no sense to me as a meal. This on papadilla pasta would have been extremely good, but by itself, it was extremely disappointing.
I found myself just wanting to leave and get the meal done with. Another messed opportunity for a great deal while vacationing in Mexico. I think I need to plan ahead better.
Would I recommend this place? Maybe? The music was a bit loud. Definitely not if you're not a Spanish speaker. Definitely if you drink a lot and know what kind of drink you specifically want. Even if you do know if you want, it's difficult to communicate this to the bartender who had limited skills. I think if you just want to come out for a drink it's a beautiful setting especially...
Read moreEl tigre silencioso has just opened and is quickly becoming one of the local’s favorite places in the Roma neighborhood. And the fame is well deserved. First and foremost, the wine diversity is to be highlighted. It is the only place in Mexico were you can have Cavas del Mogor’s chasselas or the recently launched Joto Juan (ask for the Cholillo drink, served with Casa de Piedra’s sparkling and Joto Juan). But, ok, the wine offering is great and at good prices. Now let’s talk about the food. We ordered plenty of dishes to share and I honestly suggest you do the same. We tried the pork & shitake entree (the one I would not skip if ordering many), served with little tostadas; their tuna carpaccio; brie and spinach empanada, and their wonderful mussels. I also strongly recommend their chile, beans and cheese taco. Not spicy at all and very flavorful. We also had as main course the lamb, served with flour tortillas and a three-chiles sauce, and the carnitas. THE CARNITAS, people. I cannot stress enough the recommendation to order the carnitas. They will let you know that these are served including the skin and other parts. Do it. Order them now. They were WONDERFUL. Perfect cooking, taste, equilibrium. I cannot wait to go back there and try them again. We also had both desserts, which were my least surprising part of the lunch: a date pie, with ice cream, and a buñuelo with icecream as well. Just okay, but I guess I was still amazed by the carnitas, which made the desserts the “just okay” part. In sum: go now, have somo Cavas del mogor wine, some entrees and the carnitas. Come...
Read moreWonderful dinner this evening at El Tigre Silencioso. We had reservations for 5:00 pm, but they weren't necessary as the restaurant had plenty of available seating.
El Tigre is located in a beautiful section of Roma Norte. Initially we had a little trouble finding it since it is upstairs and the signage isn't great, but eventually we found it and we're glad we did.
We were quickly seated on our server brought us our drinks immediately. We had previewed the menu online so we were pretty much knew what we wanted toght away. We shared the fish croquettes. They were lightly fried and served in a slightly spicy guacamole salsa. Absolutely delicious. My wife ordered the carnitas lechon which were served with avocado, pickled onions, and blue corn tortillas. The pork was tender and incredibly tasty. It could have been a little hotter, but it was still really good. I ordered the fish with capers and lime. The fish was light and flakey and had a delicious flavor.
For dessert we wanted to share, but we were torn between the date cake with vanilla ice cream and the figs with mascarapone. We settled the disagreement by ordering both, but we did share. The desserts were to die for and reason enough to revisit...
