During the celebration of Pride in CDMX, I encountered an unfortunate and disheartening experience at Pizzeria della Madonna that left me and my friend deeply hurt when we were discriminated against.
Upon arriving at the restaurant, we noticed the seating arrangement included tables with a chair on one side and a bench on the other. We opted to sit together on the bench side, enjoying each other's company while awaiting our order. Everything seemed fine at first.
However, after waiting an unreasonable 40 minutes for our pizzas, a waiter approached us with a perplexing request from his boss: we were not allowed to sit "like this" and were instructed to sit separately, one on the chair and the other on the bench. This request struck me as absurd and unnecessary, as we were not causing any disruption or inconvenience to anyone.
Feeling both upset and confused, we decided to leave and asked for our food to go. When my friend voiced my frustration to the restaurant manager, he was met with a dismissive and discriminatory attitude. He initially claimed that state regulations required a certain distance between tables, which was not only irrelevant but also blatantly false since we were not in the State of Mexico. His excuses quickly unraveled as baseless, and his condescending remark implied that any other interpretation was my fault, further revealing his discriminatory intent.
To make matters worse, as we exited, we noticed other tables where customers sat shoulder to shoulder without issue. This confirmed my suspicion that the manager's actions were not about any regulations but rather an unjust bias against two men sitting together in his establishment.
In the middle of 2024, and especially during Pride Weekend, it is appalling that such discrimination still exists. Pizzeria della Madonna's behavior was not only unprofessional but also deeply offensive. I strongly advise against visiting this establishment, as no one should have to endure...
Read moreFrom the moment I stepped inside, the ambiance was captivating â a lively buzz filled the air, yet it was still intimate enough for conversation. The space was clean and stylish, a modern interpretation of a classic pizzeria.
Letâs start with the margherita pizza, the litmus test for any pizzeria. It was everything a margherita should be: the crust was charred with a chewy yet airy interior, the cheese was generously portioned without overpowering, and the tomato sauce struck the right level of sweetness. Not a single slice sagged under its own weightâa triumph!
The diavola pizza followed suit. The meat added depth without tipping into salt overload, a common misstep for this style. Each bite was a crescendo of smoky, savory, and spicy flavors, and though I stuck to just two different pizzas, I suspect every pie here has its own personality.
Intrigued by the pasta being enjoyed at a nearby table, I ordered the fusilli allâamatriciana. The pasta was cooked al dente swirled in a comforting, smoky tomato sauce.
Dessert sealed the deal. The tiramisu is a mustâsoft, creamy, and decadent, with a memorable presentation. Sharing is wise, though Iâd recommend staking your claim at the onset. The pistachio ice cream, crowned with fresh pistachios, was a delightful counterpartâlight and bursting with genuine pistachio flavor.
Whether youâre in the mood for a classic pie, a surprise pasta, or a tasty dessert, it's a place worth visiting and returning to given its dedication to quality...
Read morePizzeria della Madonna is all the talk these days, and although the restaurant is beautifully decorated, the food is average at best. We were seated after just about a 10-minute wait on a Saturday, which was not bad at all. We started with a great, lovely server who took our order.
We began with Aperol Spritz and an insalata verde. Both the Aperol and the salad were okay, nothing special. The presentation of the salad was a bit much, and the drink was more watery than a well-balanced Aperol should be. We settled on ordering the prosciutto e fichi pizza, which, although it looked appetizing (especially with the fig), was mediocre at best. The pizza was very chewy, and the sauce wasnât as tasty as I had hoped.
Although we werenât planning on ordering dessert, we decided to try the famed tiramisu served in a coffee pot. It was very creative and by far the highlight of our visit. It was delicious, very rich, and filled us up. Prices were okay, except for the pizza, which was a bit pricey given the quality ($370 for a pizza for two).
Service in the beginning was great, with a lovely server taking our order, but later a different server took over and her attitude was much more negative. Pizzeria della Madonna seems to be a trendy place that is overhyped and does not seem worth it, except for...
