Had the portobello burger and the salad with smoked salmon. The burger was nonremarkable, kinda expected a larger piece of portobello for the price; their fries were quite good though- very crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I liked the salad, it had a dijon dressing that was light and enough ingredients. The bar itself was kinda grimy - the table had some food that wasnt wipes from previous customers, and it reeked of cigarette smoke. We sat at the bar area and didnt realize there was a restaurant/cafe area beside it until later… id recommend that section instead. Service was a bit slow.

Cozy place to try some beers and snacks. It’s medium expensive, prices are little above average since the place is located in a very fancy area behind vondelpark, the area is amazing though. Overall it was nothing special as you can have a very similar experience (even better) in many other places around Amsterdam. But still it’s a pretty nice place to go drink something.

Never in my life have I encountered service like this. We waited 15 minutes after entering the resteraunt before I politely went to the counter and asked if we could order here, because they seemed busy. The blonde haired waitress told me to “sit back down and wait until she is ready to serve me”. 35 years of dining I have never had this experience.

Terrible experience. First, we sat for 10 minutes without anyone coming to our table to take the order. We had to go inside the restaurant to call someone because all the waiters were chatting and not paying attention to the customers. (Detail: the restaurant was empty!!) Only our wine and water arrived, and after 40 minutes of waiting we asked why our food (a burger and a fish) was taking so long. Only then did they tell us there was some problem in the kitchen and that our order would not be prepared. Our feeling was that they forgot to place the order and made up this excuse. Honestly, unacceptable. I really hope this message reaches the owner because the staff needs to be better trained or replaced. No wonder the restaurant across the street was full. we have been so unlucky to get in this place during the only hour when the kitchen is closed: from 16.00 to 17.00. during this time we ordered some beers and classic dutch snacks waiting for the 5pm to clock to order real food, at 5.03 we asked the waiter to have a ceasar salad and we asked what soup was the soup of the day... what a mistake... the waiter panics, goes in to check and never came back to us, after 40 minutes we had to leave so we asked if at least the ceasar salad was ready but we found out they didn't place the order. no problem we thought we will pay what we got til now and leave. but no, the bill was for 59 euros and when we requested to split in 2 we have been given an amount to pay of 34 euros (clearly not 59 1/2) without thinking we paid but we immediately realised and ask for money back, not only we were told they could only give us back cash but as a reply to our concerns we have even been told in a very rude way that the waiter already said he was sorry once, meaning that should have been enough for us to not...

I went to Gruter last week with my wife during our vacations in Amsterdam. We were very tired of walking a lot during the morning in the surrounding areas and parks so we decided to stop here because the place looked nice.

We had a beer, apple juice, bread with garlic sauce (ali-oli) and something called "tapenade" that we didn't know what it was but it seems to be popular in the Netherlands (like a mix or smashed olives, very very tasty!!) and a tomato soup that was GREAT.

I love tomato soup and their's is one of the best I've had in years, it reminded me of the way it is prepared in Turkey (more creamy and intense), something I prefer over the way it's usually prepared in Spain.

Very nice place to stop by and prices were fair in line with many other places in the city. I'd really recommend Gruter if you're in the area and I'll probably come back again next time I'm...
