may 2024: Went back again and ordered butter chicken, chicken korma, mango lassi, garlic naan, and chicken momo.
Mango lassi: smaller than last time but still just as nice We didn't get any pompadom on the house this time but the table next to us did. chicken momo was nice and juicy Butter chicken was very runny, not as buttery as last time, and a bit bland. korma was quite bland and runny. garlic naan was very nice. Im assuming they changed chefs or we had a different chef this time as the curry was definitely not as good as last time - a bit disappointing.
november 2023: Amazing little restaurant hidden in the south west of Amsterdam and away from city center. Restaurant isnt massive, there were around 10-15 tables but each one was spaced apart widely so you dont need to worry about knocking into someone. When you arrive, you will be given the drinks menu and after ordering and when your drinks arrive, you will be given the food menu in english or dutch. For drinks, we ordered the mango lassi and for food, we ordered the mix starter (meat), the daal bhat (vegetarian and just a bit spicy) , butter chicken (little spicy) and a garlic naan (no corriander). Everhthing is freshly made so you can easily let the staff know what you want excluded from your dish: i.e. I didnt want any corriander.
Mango lassi: very creamy and nice. definitely a nice mango lassi. Can be slightly on the sweet side but not too sweet. topped with dessicated coconuts.
Mix starter: lamb tandoori, lamb kebab, chicken and 2 momos on a hot plate. nice and surprisingly the lamb wasnt as dry as it looked but wouldve been nicer with a sauce. I would recommend this if you want to try a bit of everythinf but otherwise, maybe not as I dont think its worth the price.
Daal Bhat: saag paneer, some vegetable curry thats a bit spicy, a lentil soup (i think i heard the boss say it was soup but not too sure), some kind of vegetable salad, a yoghurt sauce and some rice. Overall nice and you get to try a bit of everything. you can add a bit of money and swap the saag paneer to a meat curry. The saag paneer was more on the drier side of curry compared to other saags ive had but it was super green (i assume this is because its made fresh) and super buttery without the layer of oil. Really nice.
Butter chicken: You HAVE TO TRY THIS!! This is without a doubt, THE BEST butter chicken I've had and I've had a few before. super buttery but not oily. I didnt try the chicken as I only tried the sauce but it was soo nice. I couldn't stop dipping my naan into the sauce.
Garlic Naan: This wasnt the usual very thick type of naan. Its relatively thin but the outside is crispy and inside is really soft. I normally like thick fluffy naans but this one was amazing.
Overall portion sizes weren't massive for the price but considering how you can get full quite easily with curries and the taste was absolutely amazing, I would definitely recommend this place!
warning: the restaurant is partially open kitchen style and you will get food smell on your hair and clothes. The smoke made my eyes a bit watery...
Read moreThe Kathmandu restaurant lies a little hidden in the so-called Kinkerbuurt in Amsterdam Oud West. By the way, this neighborhood is not that old, it’s built in the 20th century and named after named after a Dutch philosopher Johannes Kinker… but enough about the local history. Nowadays, in the Kinkerbuurt, you will find a lot of gems from the Middle and Far Eastern countries, so the Kathmandu is certainly placed in the right place of town. Public transport is about 5 minutes walking and there is free but limited parking available, but hey who takes the car for dinner in Amsterdam?!
We found the restaurant and reserved via the restaurantweek with a group of three friends. Surprisingly, although the restaurantweek showed only very few tables available, we literally had the whole restaurant, staff and kitchen to ourselves.
Having had a look through previous (critical) reviews, I assume this place was owned or operated by a different person before, or… just had a complete makeover after the pandemic. Kathmandu, please let me know if I’m wrong :-)! Anyways, the restaurant looked very new, freshly renovated and very clean and tidy. No unnecessary deco, decent color taste and authentic modern decorated furniture. Facilities, e.g. bathrooms are very clean!
The staff was super kind and attentive. Always explained the courses, tried their best with English and asked about spice level before preparing the food. We went for medium, which was good!
The food: Please consider that we were almost the only guests which means the kitchen had good time to prepare. I did not see any take out or thuisbezorgd neither. We had 5 courses which were served nicely as shown on the pictures. The lamb and Tandoori chicken were served on a hot plate which is really cool. My recommendation would be to leave out the onions or veggies underneath as they just burned on it and left a little toasty taste. Though that’s probably just a little sidenote. We had so much food, we didn’t make it fully through the main course, but it was delicious! By the way, Kathmandu is the capital of Nepal! The food is therefore influenced by Nepalese and of course Indian flavors and served with different styles of Naan.
We had wine and water and those were both absolutely fine, but also nothing “special” at all. There is a drinks menu though and I am sure they have a lot more options.
in summary, we had a great evening and enjoyed the food. The ambience was cozy, calm and friendly. Thank you!
If this place offered take out, I would probably go more often. 60€ p.P. is not necessarily the cheapest dinner but the food is definitely worth it’s price. Will come back sometime!
Wishing you much success during the restaurantweek, dear Kathmandu restaurant, and hopefully a lot more nights with more guests...

We had the pleasure of enjoying a 4-course dinner at Kathmandu Kitchen, and it was an unforgettable experience. From the moment we walked in, the warm and inviting atmosphere set the stage for a fantastic evening.
The dishes were absolutely phenomenal—every bite was a journey of bold and authentic Nepalese flavors. The samosas and chicken dumplings were perfectly spiced and delicious starters that left us eager for the next course. The curries were rich, aromatic, and bursting with flavor—each more satisfying than the last. And the desserts? Simply divine, the perfect sweet ending to a fantastic meal.
The service was impeccable, with the staff going above and beyond to make sure we felt welcomed and taken care of. Their passion for the food and attention to detail really shone through.
