The Victoria Free House — Restaurant in Christchurch

Utterly disappointing experience last night. Admittedly we hadn’t booked and on arrival were told under no circumstances could they fit us in. As we turned around to leave we were called back saying someone had left and we could get a table upstairs. Interesting that the upstairs was only half filled the whole time we were there ?? Drinks took a very very long time to arrive as did the meals. We were told that two out of the few main meal selections were sold out and it was only 7.15pm. Just to find that bit of information out took over 20 minutes after each option was requested. Our waitress didn’t know anything about the menu “it’s sort of like that … it’s maybe this, I’ll have to check”. Once we eventually ordered we had to follow up on our meals as they took well over 40 minutes to arrive. The Welsh rarebit was revolting (looked like poo on toast) but the beef burger and parmigiana were adequate (only just as the chicken was super rubbery). Way overpriced for what we got for both service and food. A disappointing way to end our visit to Christchurch which is otherwise a delightful...

Had been wanting to check this location out for a while. Decor was nice and in theme, great bifold windows open up to allow a nice breeze through on a hot day. Staff were friendly. Food sadly was sub par I had the fish and chips with mushy peas. Fish was overcooked a little dry, the mushy peas were my greatest disappointment lacked flavor and execution not the traditional British style of mushy peas I was hoping to get. My son had the burger it was an average attempt being very soggy and lacking any real depth of flavor. The condiment section is poorly executed with sauces and salt shakers in dirty containers and not presented well. Also 16.50 for a pint of guiness felt steep especially considering it was st paddy's day. It has the potential to be an amazing true British gastro pub but without proper execution it will continue as average at...

This was spot on! My first visit since the change of ownership but I simply had 2! I live in the neighborhood and every day I pass by this place and see cheerful crowds! Our Thanksgiving dinner was great, atmosphere really warm and wonderful, as all the staff! We ordered so much it was plenty even for sharing, portions are amazing size. Tried all from fried calamari, cheese platter, chicken Parmigiana, pork ribs, beef, scotch egg, you name it! We ordered variety. Had beers on tap, wines and cocktails...all was delicious. Selection of beers was quite great 2. Deff place to visit again for fantastic pub atmosphere with a city sparkle I would say, something we were missing in that part of Christchurch for quite some time. Thank you.
