We arrived at Moo Moo Smokehouse, Takapuna, a little before 5 pm and were greeted with a notice on the door stating it was âcloseâ with a drawn in âdâ at the end which had a very unprofessional look â they need to purchase a sign with the word âclosedâ on it. It has a sports bar feel with loud music and TV screens on the sports channel. The waitress, while doing her job, didn't add anything, only took our order. It would be nice if she explained the menu. Also, she talked to my partner not me. My partner said she had obviously had not been trained as a waitress. I had said when booking that it was my partnerâs birthday but there was no mention of that. It is a large restaurant on a corner site so they really need the restaurant to be well patronised, but it was empty when we were there early on a Wednesday evening. We had the sliders which came with brisket, pork, chicken, and coleslaw which was delicious. We also had the chunky chips which on the menu says it comes with âhouse made chipotle mayoâ but it did not so we had to ask for that. There was too much to eat so we took some home. They serve premium wagyu beef, slow-smoked for 12 to 14 hours, and you can taste the difference in every bite. I donât understand the complaints about the paper plates â the focus here is clearly on the quality of the food, not the tableware. In fact, it adds to the authentic Texas smokehouse vibe. You're getting top-tier wagyu, expertly smoked, cooked, and served right to your table and they even clean up for you. Thatâs the value youâre paying for.    Read moreWe visited after reading a string of glowing reviews, and Iâm happy to say it more than lived up to the hype. I opted for the Wagyu beef short rib with mac and cheese and slaw, while my fiancĂŠe chose the pulled pork with the same sides.
The food was exceptional. The short rib was melt-in-the-mouth tender, rich in flavour, and cooked to perfection. The mac and cheese was equally impressive â creamy without being watery, and with a cheese sauce that struck just the right balance. Simple sides, but executed with real care.
Service was another highlight. The manager took time to chat with us â asking what we enjoyed, if anything could be improved, and where we were visiting from. It felt genuine, and added a personal touch thatâs all too rare but essential in delivering a memorable dining experience.
