My friend and I finally got to eat here tonight. We tried to pop in randomly on a Friday night but we were too late. I had #35 and #65 🍴 my dessert (#65) was the highlight - chocolate brownie lava with Milo sauce.
Well I went back for lunch this year (on my birthday) and the space had been recently renovated. It looks great! I had the crispy chicken with curry sauce. I asked if the rice could be swapped to the ginger rice because it's obviously better than plain rice and I opted for the curry sauce version because without it the dish is quite dry. The kitchen accommodated this which was great. Unfortunately, they didn't have teh tarik on the menu, which is my favourite so hopefully they'll have it next time. Also ordered the chicken larb.
Had dinner here with colleagues on a Fri night. I ordered the wontons, iced milk tea and the tom yum fried rice with beef. The fried rice was delicious and I'd totally order it again. The iced milk tea was really just ice and watered down milk (even though I asked for less ice) and not worth the price. Wontons had more pastry than filling and portion isn't worth the price. I won't be ordering the drink or wontons in future. Location is great although there is no alternative to the stairs so accessibility could be an issue for some patrons. Had the stir fried beef satay and curry puffs for dinner here recently and you now order through the QR code on the table and you can pay after your meal or before it arrives. I had a show to go to at the Civic so I paid at the till as soon as I ordered so that once I ate I could just leave. Enjoyed my meal and I'd recommend...
Read moreGreat welcome and service. Extensive menu, including vegetarian choices. Food is fresh, flavourful and beautifully presented on enamel metal (camping) plates in keeping with the street food twist concept. Music subdued. Large tables for 4-8 with chairs or benches. Strings of lights give it a cantina/patio feel, although it takes up the length of the basement of Elliott Stables. Cocktails are fresh and pricy. Lots of beers, many on tap. Some interesting wines choices, few local. I enjoyed the green papaya salad, enough for one as a main or for 2 as an accompaniment. Sticky rice was hot and perfectly cooked. Vegetable spring rolls were petite. The order of 4 cigar shaped rolls would have been better rolled into 2 thicker sausages, then sliced in half on the diagonal IMHO- more vegetables, less wrapper. The chili jam was superb- thick with a slight kick. Bathrooms are at the back up the stairs, shared with the other Stables restaurants: pristinely clean and well lit. I cannot see any handicap/wheelchair access, except to take out and dine at one of the outdoor Stables tables. I would return and try some...
Read moreWe've been dining at this place for years, but tonight was a huge disappointment. We found a piece of plastic in the cream cheese crab dumpling and showed it to one of the staff members who knows us well. She took the plastic and walked away without saying anything. We waited for about 10 minutes, expecting an explanation or at least an apology, but she stayed near the cashier, ignoring us.
Eventually, we went up to the counter, where she finally offered a 20% discount on that dish — about $3 NZD — with no apology or accountability. She said they’re "investigating" because the restaurant supposedly doesn’t use plastic, which felt like she was implying we might’ve planted it. When I asked her directly, she denied it but said she’d look into whether any staff brought plastic in from outside.
What really upset me was the complete lack of customer care — no one came back to our table, no apology, nothing. Just a 3 dollar discount from our 81 dollar bill and being brushed off. For loyal customers who’ve supported this place for years, it’s unacceptable. We won’t be...
