Kaly Restaurant & Lounge
Fresh. Swank. Exquisite. International. Crisp. Almost flawless concept and execution.
Set on the 7th and top floor of Number One (easily one of the most beautiful buildings on the island), the views from the balcony in Kaly Restaurant are soothing.
Fine dining restaurant and lounge. Premium priced but quality doesn’t come cheap.
I’ve been to upscale restaurants in Dubai, Doha, Singapore, etc and KALY holds its place in the global realm.
I’m big on aesthetics and detail; this place is mentally uplifting for ab aesthete and is one of the few places I have reviewed which almost got my rare 5-star rating. Especially because of their efforts at honest sustainability - using actual live greenery inside and outside.
Plastic plants are anathema to me; because they add to the problem they are supposedly meant to ameliorate - plastic waste. It’s better not to have any decorative plants at all, than to have fake ones made of plastic!
Plastic plants are like dummy fire extinguishers filled with an inflammable liquid: useless and add to the problem they are supposedly meant to solve.
KALY has natural plants inside and outside the property; talk about being deliberate! This environmental consciousness and respect for authenticity is rare and must be given plaudits.
Only downsides for me were:
Firstly, the lights going off when power trips off, sometimes for over 10 seconds. This is a very simple problem to fix - using an inverter with adequate batteries. ACs and other heavy appliances can go off, but not lighting!
Secondly, parking is a bit tight and limited.
Lastly, what is it with certain restaurants adding a Service Charge - when service costs have already been priced into meals and drinks?! Are your customers supposed to go to the kitchen, bar and stores to get the items they have ordered? Common!
The meals were fresh, as expected, and the taste was just okay. Expect continental; don’t visit this place if you intend to try out local delicacies.
The lounge is spectacular too; albeit with a small interior. The exterior seating area makes up for that. Expect to see top DJs performing on Fridays and Saturdays.
This place is highly recommended for individual, couple and especially group sit-outs…if you’re not...
Read moreAs we arrived the decor and atmosphere were very nice. The staff was incredibly warm and welcoming - they seated us quickly and got our table started with some water and focaccia before beginning with our drinks orders. There was always someone nearby to assist.
The reason for the low score is because at the end of the day, this is a restaurant and the food was disappointing to say the least.
We ordered starters which came out in good time and were okay. Nothing to write home about. The salad was a great portion, but had a very sweet and abundant dressing, which we could have had on the side. The chicken wings lacked flavour - they could have been marinated for a longer time before cooking. The hummus was nice, especially with the shrimp but it was served without anything to dip! Just straight hummus. No bread/pita, veggies or anything.
Then we ordered mains, and of the 4 of us, only 1 enjoyed our meal. The fish was incredibly dry! Both the salmon and the seabass. The chicken was the same - dry and lacking flavour. Even the grilled veggies on the side- undercooked and underseaoned. The only nice dish reported was the Duck, which was cooked to perfection and falling off the bone.
To salvage the dinner, we ordered a Berry Cheesecake which, contrary to the other courses, was absolutely DIVINE! The cream cheese was the perfect consistency - almost like soft serve: creamy, fluffy and light. And the Red Berry sauce was served on the side to pour over - which I feel could have been done with the salads we had for starters. Overall we had a good time and were taken care of by staff. Our drinks were topped up frequently, and the cocktails we tried were delicious. Only the food...
Read moreWe recently dined at a restaurant called Kaly—spelled K-A-L-Y—in the heart of Victoria Island, and I must say, the interior design was stunning. The space was beautifully lit and thoughtfully designed, creating an inviting atmosphere.
We were seated and given the menu, and I was particularly excited to try the smoked herbal salmon, as I had read great reviews. My friend opted for the chicken with some sauces—I’m not entirely sure of the details, but there was definitely chicken involved. I’ll be sharing pictures in the review, so keep an eye out for those.
We started with drinks: I had a passion fruit cocktail, which turned out to be a bit too strong, with the flavor getting lost in the alcohol. I’m not usually into overly strong drinks and would have preferred a more balanced flavor. My friend’s apple mocktail also missed the mark; it was mostly foam with just a hint of apple juice and lime, leaving her quite disappointed.
On to the food: my smoked salmon was quite good, although the sauce did become a bit overwhelming after a few bites. My friend’s chicken dish, however, was a highlight—tender and flavorful, paired with delicious fries.
I must commend Kaly on their excellent service. The waitstaff were attentive and ensured we had everything we needed. A special shout-out goes to the staff member in the bathroom—Blessed, I believe—who went above and beyond by helping us take some great pictures. Her assistance was greatly appreciated.
Overall, Kaly offers a chic setting with a few areas for improvement. Despite some hiccups, it was a pleasant dining experience and definitely...
