The Union Jack Tavern is pretty much the only offering and British Pub Experience in all of Manila. Having just arrived in the city, only an expat will understand what it feels like to have a cup of tea that tastes just like home and to dig into something that tastes like home. Its for comfort because it's nice to take a break from the local culinary fare
30 hours of missed connections and flights from Ethiopia I arrive in Manila. After 14 hours of fantastic sleep I am blessed to learn that this place is serving "The Full English" luckily it's only a 10 minute walk from my hotel.
I ordered a full english breakfast with a cup of tea. I asked for no tomato, and ordered extra black pudding.
The breakfast didn't arrive with bread so I then ordered bread
The breakfast looked great and the staff are very attentive and friendly, the lady took my order and the food arrived in around 8-10 minutes.
Here are my personal views on the breakfast. On Facebook they have a image post similar to another posted by a customer on Tripadvisor that shows some sort of breakfast deal, I was hoping to take advantage of that. Sadly I had to order from the main menu even though the restaurant was empty and I was charged for changing hand cut chips into a hash brown.
Tea was great, 3 large cups to a pot of tea. Black pudding tasted like breadcrumbs. Unpleasant Bacon was American style and streaky. Felt like rubber, not crispy at all Beans excellent Eggs cooked just as I ordered them. Excellent Sausages- excellent quality Sliced bread, slight taste of bleached flour, warmed up from frozen Butter, wasn't butter, some sort of spread or margarine Hashbrown, just like McDonalds
The price I paid is below £16.47 GBP $19.97 USD $1,045.71 PHP
The reason I am leaving a one star review is because a few things. Firstly, the music was terrible. While I was there I had to ask the server to turn the music down and switch the track, some sort of apocalyptic house- drum and bass song was playing. The rest of the play list was equally disappointing. When your sitting alone in a restaurant, nothing to read, no phone to mess with, the ambience of the music is important. My suggestion to the owner would be to find a british pub playlist. The UK serves as a stable to some of the best music ever produced. Rolling Stones, Beatles to modern acts like Oasis, Keane, Adele. While you promote "A great British Experience" I never got the music. There is so much Great British Music out there, it would be impossible to NOT find music suitable for all times of the day.
When I arrived I sat down, I noticed that everyone was smoking, I asked the waiter if there was a non smoking area where I ended up sitting alone. In what felt like a completely different restaurant. My suggestion would be to kill the smoking area. It can only be the ego of the owner that smoking is promoted as it is clearly understood worldwide that smoking in a restaurant and bar is actually disgusting and passive smoking causes cancer. The idea you employ people and have them breath in other people's smoke, is preposterous and ancient. I was happy to see a heavily pregnant employee smile as she worked but felt sorry she had to breath in passive smoke. For that alone I hope you face personal lawsuits as you knowingly allow this in your business. I urge you to reevaluate your offering and change it. Its 2019 for God's sake.
The dressage in the windows was dirty and greasy and some of the chairs were broken or covered in tape.
One of the understandings of the food business is that you are either first or the best. It will only be a matter of time before someone comes a long and offers something far more superior in terms of value and this place which boosts it offers "Great British Pub Experience" will just be mocked in the review section of social media sites. If you are going to charge a crazy price for a breakfast, the experience should be worth it. On this occasion it was not. For $700PHP you can eat from an international buffet at a 5 star hotel from...
Read moreLocated well within Makati and if you are in a car it can be a nightmare to park. Thete are limited onstreet parking and if you waot you might eventually get something. The maximum parking period is 3 hours so food and a drink should be OK.
Once 8ns8de it is a llittle like a UK pub with what seems a restaurant side andxa bar side.
The prices are a little on the high side but cheaper than most hotels.
They say they offer UK flavoured food, but sadly i found that not to be the case. The Chicken Tikka Masala was nothing like ut is served in the UK and the taste is very heavily biased towards tomato. The Chicken breast is with a tikka flavour but the masala is served as a seperate flavour on the plate.
The Buttered Chicken yet again wss heavily over flavoured with tomato and nothing like you would get in the UK.
I am not saying that the dishes were not OK, they were just not what was expected.
The chips and curry sause is actually more like potato wedges and a creamy sauce.
The Sticky Toffee pudding was more like a chocolate cake than sticky toffee.
A couple in the group had Bangers and Mash - Pork and they found the meal quite good.
Another had Biryani, there was a lot of food and the flavour was good.
Apparently the Cider was also worth a try.
WOULD I RECOMMEND? If you are in the area give it a go - a taste is there but not the way you might expect.
WILL I RETURN? Doubtful, but if i do i will try...
Read moreLove the place.Love the bear. Special remark, that its one of few Pubs which look like a classical British pub, but it docent have disgusting smell of old spilled beer which smoked into wood in it. Staff is amazing. And it has a smoking area. So pub looks like what pub should look like. No one gets discriminated. Always have a vide choice of good imported beers. Food is good for its money. Ill be honest, only some of menu positions are great, majority are ok. But -1 star. In there menu they not including vat and service fee. So when ever you receiving a bill after a night out. It is always above what you been estimating while ordering. So not terrible but unpleasant enface.
But it is a still great pub. All of my memories is absolutely positive with it. Plus this place is great for expats. As food much like European and the are always Americans Australians or...
