Went with my mother as we love shellfish and read great reviews.
Sat down and I asked a few questions about the menu. The owner wouldn't tell me how many grams in a portion, quite important as they charge by weight. She wouldn't tell me how they prepare the different types, what sauce, steamed, or grilled. She only replies it depends and showed no patience, we left.
A couple night later, I thought let's go back as I wanted to try the food, I like non pretentious places that serve real local cuisine. My mom walked in and sat at the bar which was 75% empty. I went outside to read what the menu had that day. When I came back in the woman who was previously rude gave a rhy smile, however now another older lady started attacking my mother verbally because she doesn't speak Portuguese, saying: "I don't speak English, just Portuguese, waving her hands and throwing a tantrum. Making her feel very uncomfortable.
I asked my mom what happened she said, she sat on a bar stool that was occupied by a local who turned out to be outside smoking so she didn't know and politely moved over. The woman got so pissed off that she couldn't understand "this seat is occupied" in Portuguese she starts losing her mind.
I speak Portuguese and looked at the woman and asked if she is serious....she ignored me shrugged her shoulders and again we left.
It's petty and they do not like tourists, regardless if you live in the country and speak the language, contribute to the economy.
Take your money elsewhere, it's not our fault the older generations have a chip on their shoulder because they were ruled by Salazar the dictator who treated them badly, doesn't mean you insult kind hearted people, because they have blonde hair and speak with an...
Read moreI’ve seen a lot of joints promising "authenticity" only to deliver a theme-park approximation of a foreign country, usually involving laminated menus and waiters who look like they’d rather be anywhere else. Cervejaria Ferradura, thankfully, isn't one of them. This place is the raw, beating heart of Portuguese coastal cuisine, a beautiful, necessary mess that hits you like a cold, bracing slap of salt spray. Forget the polished marble and the hushed, reverent tones of your average gastro-temple; this is a working man's theatre of shellfish and cold beer, and it earns every one of its five stars by simply being true to itself. The atmosphere isn't "charming," it's ferocious—the controlled chaos of a line that knows its business. Your eyes will immediately lock onto the counter, where the day’s haul—the good stuff—is proudly laid out. You have to go for the elemental truth: the razor clams, tasting of nothing but brine, fire, and a generous slick of good olive oil. Pair that with the bifana—a pork sandwich so ridiculously simple, yet so profoundly flavorful, that it makes you question every over-engineered hunk of meat you’ve ever paid too much for. The pork, hammered and slow-cooked in a spicy, vinegary broth, bleeds into the crusty roll. Wash it all down with a jug of the house wine, cold enough to numb a filling, and watch the beautiful, dedicated people who keep this engine running. This isn’t dining; it’s refueling the soul. It’s honest work, honest food, and the kind of meal you remember long after the hangover fades. Do yourself a favor and get here before the wrong people find out and try to sanitize the poetry right out of...
Read moreIf I could give 0 stars I would. My husband and I ate here, he's sick and I feel robbed. Disgusting, rude and unfriendly. AVOID!
I would of left it here, but the owners have the audacity to reply and try and cover up.
Just to be clear my HUSBAND and l - were served by two ladies. one with glasses in the "kitchen" & one who still thinks she's 20 years old behind the bar.
Clearly they both have no sense of accountability and think they can get away with it. NOT WITH ME!
MY HUSBAND IS SICK BECAUSE OF THE CLAMS YOU COOKED OR THE BIFFANA OR THE "SARDINES" - YOU COOKED. - DISGUSTING FOR 4 TINY AMATEUR DISHES!! TWO GLASSES OF WINE AND ONE BEER WE PAID 73.85.
Your bar looks Portugese, and you may speak Portugese. But the rest of Portugal should be ashamed that you associate yourself under the same Portugese flag. Because this restaurant has nothing to do with the Portugese hospitality we experienced on our trip.
Both the two ladies running this bar should be fired and jailed. Grumpy, Rude AND MEAN TO OTHER GUESTS NOT JUST US.
Have a nice...
