I was really dissapointed with my experience here. I was excited to come here to try the coffee based on the good reviews and to just finally relax and draw and have a cup of coffee after many days of go go go. I draw on a tablet (as many many artists do, especially when travelling because traveling with all your art supplies is unrealistic). I was kicked out because of a no laptop policy. Which....I totally understand because you can't just have people sitting there working all day - in addition to being an artist I also work in tech and remotely so believe me - I get this policy with the proliferation of digital nomads. I'm very cognizant of the impact on small businesses that this, especially ones with small brick and mortar locations.
But...I'm drawing.... And I asked if I had pencil and paper if it would be different and they said that would be fine. I've traveled all around the world, drawing on my tablet in cafes with variable policies against laptops in (which again I totally get) but this is the first time I got kicked out when I was clearly drawing. I can understand their argument of "if someone with a laptop sees it then we'll have to have a whole discussion", but I guess it just seems like a non issue to me to have that conversation? In terms of difficulty of conversation it seems like a 3/10 in conflict resolution, and if you're comfortable kicking me out for drawing on a tablet, then I can't imagine having the conversation with someone who comes in with a laptop would be much more difficult. 🤷🏽♀️
It felt humiliating and very dysregulating to be kicked out in front of a bunch of people for just wanting to work on my art. It unfortunately left a really sour taste in my mouth, as it's literally never happened to me in years of travel across the world and really ruined the rest of my night. I literally cried after this experience as I stepped no more than a few steps away from this cafe.
They gave me a list of coworking spaces where laptops are allowed which I can appreciate the one woman was trying to be kind, but it simply is not the aligned. Sketching a small picture is not the same as me pulling up zoom and my design programs and having a full on work experience. I even told them I wasn't going to be more than a half hour as I just wanted to sketch a bit and have a coffee.
If you come analog with pencil and paper you're ok but if you're drawing digitally you're not. You're doing the exact same thing but they will result in very different things. I get that it's the cafe's policy, but I hope that they will become open to taking on the discomfort of having potentially hard to have conversations with would be lap top users so you don't alienate a bunch of artists who just want to draw on a tablet because it's simply an easier medium to travel with.
One woman (the one with the short hair) was much kinder about it all then the other. I tried to navigate the conversation with as much politeness as possible, though in the moment I felt extremely disoriented and dysregulated, so I do appreciate the kinder...
Read moreHmm, maybe it was an unnessecary mistake after all to chose a British Cafe in Portugal :-) After chosing a seat, ordering and receiving my order I was told that it is not ok to open my laptop ...because of all those other people who, according to the elderly waitress at the counter, come and block their tables for hours. There was barely anyone besides me at that time, and it also didn't help explaining her I would leave latest in 30mins for an appointment. On the contrary, I was told that there are working stations down the street, whatever that means. Didn't feel welcomed and would have appreciated a sign somewhere about this exceptional rules, or at least a hint BEFORE placing my order. The overall low experience was rounded up by a pretty non-amazing hot drink, rather annoying loud music, plus the overall let's call it British Charme in the communication (I never met a London Tiger, but would intuitively say the name is well chosen.) Cannot recommend to anyone and will certainly not visit again. And should you look for a place to read your mails on a coffee, be informed that there are plenty of other cafes plus a few co-working places around that have nothing to do with London and may be far...
Read moreSo the coffee was very very good and we had a brownie with ice cream that was DOPE. I swear it was one of the best I had in a long time. The carrot cake was not even close as good tho. We sat there for quite a while and it was ok. There was one of the ladies who was nice but there are two others that are really not nice at all. See they have a sign that reads “No laptops here” but then it says “just allowed for a quick email review”. I needed to do that so I asked (just to double check) if I could, and they didn’t even let me finish my sentence and were like “NO. No laptops here”.. Like ok calm down I got it but just be clear on your freaking sign haha. Still, if you don’t mind those two old ladies being not the nicest, and you don’t need to even turn your computer on, you should try their...
