When researching my trip to Portugal, I read that ginjinha is popular here, which is a cherry liqueur. I happened to find this spot on Google Maps because it was right around the corner form our hotel, and had great reviews. We popped on over for a try one night after dinner at around 9:30 on a Thursday. It's a hole in the wall, so there are no seats but it was still pretty busy. The walls are lined with bottles and bottles of ginjinha. You can order it with or without a cherry, then you bring it outside to sip, and just return the glass to them afterwards. I must say that I liked it better than I thought I would, especially since I don't love cherry-flavored things. It was sweet and tart at the same time. It reminded me of cranberry or pomegranate juice (but with some alcohol in it). It's definitely a digestiv to be having after a meal because it's so sweet. Plus, I think each small glass (maybe about 1.5 shots worth) was only €2.50, which was pretty cheap. I'm sure they have these types of ginjinha bars everywhere but if you're in the area, this is a good...
Read moreA Ginjinha is an absolute must-visit spot in Lisbon for anyone who loves ginjinha. I've been a customer for over 19 years and it never disappoints. Even though it can get quite crowded at times, the staff is always friendly and efficient.
On this occasion, we chose our ginjinha without fruit. The drink was perfectly balanced, not too sweet, and with just the right amount of alcohol. The taste was smooth, and it went down really easily. It was clear that the quality of the ginjinha at Espinheira is top-notch.
The bar itself is an authentic and historic place, with a charming and cozy atmosphere. There are no places to sit. The bar is always full of locals and tourists alike, all enjoying this classic Lisbon experience.
In conclusion, the quality of the drink, combined with the historic and welcoming atmosphere, make it a must-visit spot for anyone traveling to Lisbon.

Read moreFirst night in Lisbon, rain pelting down (unseasonably) and tired from travel. My daughter took me to this place. A couple of shots warmed me very nicely. Whether or not you like the drink is a matter of personal taste. I do, my daughter does, my wife was not so keen on the bottle I brought back to England (so guess it's just for me). The place is tiny, but to my visitor's eyes delightful. To those reviewers who think it costs too much--- really? Less than €2 for a shot? Sure, there's cheaper booze in Lisbon, and plenty that's dearer. But a bit of relatevely small change for 10 mins of pleasure ain't going to break the bank. This little gem isn't somewhere for a big session. It's for a few minutes' calm in the day's bustle and in my humble opinion offers this...
