I enjoyed my stay in the Gat Rossio.
Positives:
the location is incredible. the staff and service! Best staff ever. breakfast is really good! everything was very clean.
Downsides: for the single room, the price felt too high for the facilities. facilities in the room were not ideal. soundproofing isn’t the worst but also not great.
Longer version:
The location is really ideal. The neighborhood is animated in a fun way but feels very safe. It is at the edge of the tourist area, right next to the metro and many bus stations. It’s close enough to everything that you can come back and take breaks if needed between visits. Based on location alone, I would stay here again if possible.
The hotel itself is a nicely decorated, clean place. There is an elevator, the breakfast room is on the first floor (not the ground floor) and there is a nice outdoor terrace there.
The breakfast was delicious and the staff helping there was friendly and very attentive.
The hotel staff was truly the best. They were extremely kind and helpful. I needed ice for an ankle injury and the staff provided me with a literal bucket of ice whenever I asked. I was able to easily communicate with them in English or in my (very weak) Portuguese. They were also full of good tips for things to do (like the Estufa fria in the Eduard IV. park!), restaurants, etc. I chatted a while with Beatriz Pereira, Ruan and Fabio and I hope the hotel knows these and other members of staff are their best asset!
The big downside of this stay for me was the single room. It was extremely clean and housekeeping was great. Otherwise, i it’s not to the level I expect for the rate I paid. The sink was in the bedroom instead of the bathroom. This gave the bedroom a very hostel feel, and also took up the spot where a table would be, so there were not many areas to put one’s things. The furniture that was there had rounded edges so things would fall or roll off - not a great design choice!
There was also no stool or chair, and as I said no table. I feel like for a room of 100€+ euro a night, this is a reasonable expectation. For that rate I would also expect a mini fridge, and/or a kettle, or a proper closet, but neither were there (there was only an open closet type of piece of furniture which was not very convenient to use). The bed was also not very wide and annoyingly, there was nowhere to put the two extra pillows when sleeping, since there was no chair… there was also an annoying, intermittent buzzing in the room which I was told by staff probably comes from a lamp built into the bedhead.
All in all the room annoyed me enough that I probably wouldn’t stay here alone as a single person, which is too bad because I loved the hotel. The two person bedrooms are probably worth it if they are better equipped. I would strongly encourage the hotel management to work on improving the room equipment to match...
Read moreY'know what's stressful? Booking a hotel in Lisbon & the night before your flight realizing the hotel is actually in Berlin. This is what happened to me because I used the Gat Rossio website. I'm writing this review, because it's been over 3 weeks since I brought this problem to their attention & they still haven't resolved the issue that caused this mix-up. I'm worried others will have the same experience.
So if you go to the official Gat Rossio site on your mobile phone, click the side bar, and select "BOOK NOW" you will be redirected to a page of hotel rooms. It looks aesthetically identical to the Gat Rossio page, but it's actually for their other hotel in Berlin, Gat Point Charlie. On that page they only note in very small grey font that this hotel is in Berlin, and absolutely nowhere on the billing information does this appear. (They only note a street address, but not the city it's in.)
The management offered to transfer my booking to Lisbon, but it wasn't until I brought up that i was now overpaying by $50 a night that they reimbursed my other booking, and charged me the correct amount. (As well, the Gat Rossio website said they had absolutely no availability, but somehow they were able to get me a room?)
I did get free breakfast for my troubles, and they made it sound like I was also given a 15% discount on the accommodations. However, I later learned everyone is given that discount if they make their reservation using their cursed website, so... it wasn't actually a discount, because obviously they're not going to use a third-party booking platform.
Either way, the free breakfast really wasn't worth the stress & didn't cover the long distance phone bill I racked-up calling up the hotel in Berlin & Lisbon to figure out what could be done. As well, staff noted to me on the phone that this has happened before, but the management insists otherwise.
I don't want to get any staff in trouble, because they were honestly great, but the fact they still haven't fixed this problem on the website... I can't help but think the owners are running a racket, overcharging visitors that weren't aware they had been directed to a whole other hotel page.
I sent them a screenshot video of how this mistake occurred weeks ago. They've definitely watched my video showing exactly where the link problem is. It's honestly really disappointing to see they still haven't fixed their website, especially when it doesn't take that long to update a URL.
Either way, if people have to stay at this hotel, I would recommend not using their website to book, or finding accommodations that are owned by locals. It's really unfortunate that people from Germany may be running a scam & leaving the staff in Portugal to deal with the...
Read moreHotel Gat Rossio is conveniently located in the center of Lisboa. The knowledgeable, friendly multinational, multilinguistic staff and guests made this our first and favorite place to stay for our three week visit to Portugal. After our very long flight we were ready for peace and quiet. The airport bus stop (Bus #1 Stop#8) is located at Praca Dosand Restauradores with its Metro station, just across square from the Hotel Gat Rossio. The Nacional Dona Maria II Teatro, Rossio Sq. with its Metro station, Largo De Sao Domingos with a taxi stand and many great restaurants are just steps away. Greeted by Mara, she quickly assessed our condition, in flawless English she checked us in, gave us a couple of pointers before sending us off to bed. The staff at any Hotel are the first and last people we meet. Mara and the other staff were always ready to answer our questions, give us weary tourists excellent directions, recommendations for sights, restaurants of all types, the closest coin laundry (just around the corner)while doing so in many different languages. When they have the time we enjoyed chatting with them. Without exception everyone we met there was cheerful, pleasant to deal with, and willing to answer questions no matter how many times they were asked in any language. The rooms are of an adequate size. Remodeling centuries old buildings is a challenge. The amusing decorations made us happier every time we saw them. Imaginative arrangements in the rooms reminded us that we carry too much baggage. The best sleep during our three week visit was in the comfortable beds in the very quiet rooms. Breakfast is served. A great selection of healthy items, a selection of pastry, meats and cheeses, cereals, and coffee is readily available. Our orange juice is made right before our eyes. Sitting next to so many other visitors from all over the world encourages us to exchange ideas, views and highlights to visit. The attentive staff is able to keep up with us as we locust the offerings. Here is a little more regarding the location. Multiple bus lines at the Praca Dosand Restauradores can get you anywhere in Lisboa. Rossi train station is across the plaza via an underpass. Real information store across the street on the plaza. Gelato just around the corner. Nondairy gelato just around the other corner. Excellent vegetarian food across one street. Two wonderful restaurants on either side. Real Portuguese souvenirs two doors away. A flat walk to the main tourist streets and waterfront. No reason to stay...
