Solar da Beira Baixa – Lisbon
This restaurant is located on a street that doesn’t look very inviting, just off the city center — I was honestly skeptical at first. I stopped in just to rest and have a beer after walking all morning, but I ended up staying for a full meal, and I’m glad I did.
The waitress was welcoming and transparent. She offered me bread, butter, and sardine pâté, and clearly informed me they would cost around €3. I appreciated the honesty — unlike many places in Lisbon where they bring these items without asking and then charge you afterward.
Out of curiosity, I asked about the fresh fish of the day, and she recommended the dourada (sea bream). It was incredibly fresh, well-cooked, and full of flavor. The dish came with boiled potatoes and a small side salad, making it a complete, satisfying meal — all for just €12, which is a fantastic deal for such quality.
The restaurant itself is simple and located in a less charming part of town, but it’s clean, authentic, affordable, and serves genuinely fresh food.
My final bill was supposed to be around €28, but when I paid by debit card, I noticed I was charged €34. I assume this might have included a tip or some card fee, but it wasn’t clearly explained — something to be aware of.

Would I go back? Yes — definitely for the food and value. Just keep an eye on the total...
Read moreUntil some time ago this restaurant only served portuguese food. Last time I went there it was a mix of indian and portuguese (it seems it was bought by an Indian family but they decided to keep the portuguese menu also). We went only for the portuguese food and it was good and the price was honest.
For the peoplem complaining about the olives and bread being charged without you being warned, I'm sorry to say but this is standar practice here in Portugal. If it's in the table and you eat it, you'll be charged. We are used to this, but I do understand that for foreign people it's odd.. but hey, it's the way it works in almost all restaurants...
Read moreNot recommended at all !! Small sized plates filled mainly with white rice and fries and limited portions of meat/fish. Basic dishes on the menu which were not very tasty & my plate was soaking in cooking oil! There is far better value & quality of food in Lisbon. Owner at time of payment sneakily choose to take payment other than in euros with an exchange rate mark up when using my credit card for his own financial advantage without my consent....
