The George is a British-style pub conveniently located on Rua do Crucifixo in the heart of Lisbon’s Baixa district. Its central position makes it an easy find for anyone exploring the city’s historic downtown, and its classic pub ambiance offers a slice of British culture in the Portuguese capital. While our visit was brief and late at night, there were enough positives to warrant a mention, even if the overall experience didn’t leave a lasting impression.
Arriving near closing time, we found the pub empty and quiet, with no signs of the bustling crowd one might expect at a place like this earlier in the evening. Despite this, the staff’s professionalism stood out. They welcomed us with warmth and politeness, allowing us to enjoy a drink before they closed for the night. Their accommodating attitude was a highlight of our visit and added a sense of hospitality that left a positive impression.
We ordered a La Chouffe and another beer from their extensive menu. Both were served perfectly chilled and were enjoyable, reflecting the pub’s reputation for offering a strong selection of beers. The George is known for its variety, featuring both draft and bottled options, catering to casual beer drinkers and enthusiasts alike. However, the lack of ambiance during our visit—due to the late hour—meant we couldn’t fully appreciate the pub’s character or its potential energy during busier times.
What makes The George particularly appealing is its location. Situated a short walk from the Baixa-Chiado metro station, it’s surrounded by some of Lisbon’s most iconic landmarks and attractions. After a drink here, you can easily explore Rua Augusta, the city’s bustling pedestrian street filled with shops, cafes, and street performers. Alternatively, take a short stroll to the magnificent Praça do Comércio, where the Tagus River provides a stunning backdrop for photos or a peaceful walk. For those seeking a bird’s-eye view of the city, the Santa Justa Elevator is also nearby, offering unparalleled panoramas of Lisbon’s rooftops and historic streets.
While The George has its strengths—such as its extensive beer selection, friendly service, and convenient location—our experience was limited by the time of our visit. It’s clear that this pub has the potential to shine during livelier hours, especially for those seeking a traditional British pub atmosphere in Lisbon.
In conclusion, The George is a decent choice for a casual drink if you’re exploring the Baixa district. While our late-night visit didn’t capture its full charm, it’s easy to imagine it being a more vibrant and enjoyable spot earlier in the evening. For its prime location, welcoming staff, and solid beer offerings, it earns a...
Read moreUpdate after the fifth or sixth visit Still one of the best burgers and best places to watch certain sporting events. I have now also tried the fish and chips which were disappointing. I like more fish than batter and these were almost all batter and barely any fish. Tasted alright. They make all their own sauces, I think, and whichever comes with the fish and chips is pretty stellar. It's a shame but I don't think I'll be able to come here too frequently if the only thing on the menu that really shines are the burgers because there's intense competition in Lisboa for great burgers. After 37 years in the US, I can say Europe is firmly in the lead for all things food, including burgers. Lisboa has a great bunch of places making stellar burgers with the best ingredients.
Update after second visit It is with great sadness that I report our second visit to The George reduced my excitement a little bit. The same burger as the first time was a very weird texture, overly hard, and very red throughout. It was hot so I wasn't bothered but I wonder why the texture of the meat was so odd.
Secondly, the toppings were almost nonexistent and all just in the center. One half of a cherry tomato, one piece of bacon too small to get some in each bite, about three pieces of onion, you get the idea. The bread was soaked with liquid from the meat, another sign it was undercooked. It just wasn't as good in any regard. I'll still come back but I can no longer recommend it as a great burger until I see what is normal: the good one or the bad one?
Original review
Excellent pub. I've been in Lisboa two weeks and am a hamburger enthusiast and I haven't been tempted to order a burger anywhere for fear that they'll be a disappointment. Here, I caved.
There are a few things that elevate burgers to new levels. Obviously the meat can't be cheap, freezer-section, unseasoned junk. Secondly, the bread should not a factory, white, sesame seed bun. That's what fast food is for. Lastly, the toppings shouldn't compete with each other or overpower each other.
This place makes a great burger. I got the George and it is served on fantastic bread with a great, flavorful patty that isn't overcooked, and balanced seasonings and toppings. Fries are good and the portions are more than you need.
Finally, the beer prices are right where you want them to be; no gouging for being in a touristy area. Five stars,...
Read moreI was visiting Portugal, from Brooklyn , and asked my concierge for a nearby spot to watch MY Buffalo Bill's whoop dem New Orleans Saints. Without hesitation he directed me to "The George". A Publick Houuse with Amazing food and atmosphere. I didn't listen and went to "The Couch", on the advice of Timeout Magazines top ten sports are list for Lisbon, instead. It was decent and FULL of sports fans. Food looked and smelled good, but a little too crowded for me to indulge. Bartenders were friendly and attentive. But, when I did get to The George, it was a whole 'another story! The venue was a beautiful old building tastefully transformed into a warm pub atmosphere. The Beef Wellington i received exceeded all expectations. Staff was friendly and accommodating and switched to NFL highlights while awaiting the Monday Night Nyets vs DollPins game. Hopefully they tie, like the Cowgirls and Slackers...
