Good tasting coffee, but very disappointed with the staff.
I am a home barista and it was a long weekend. I could not find any coffee roasters open to purchase fresh coffee beans for use at home. Tiki Tonga was one of the roasters that were open so I traveled quiet a distance hoping to get freshly roasted coffee beans. The staff were very friendly and helpful when asking about their coffee. I purchased a latte to go and that was delicious. My disappoint comes when I asked for freshly roasted coffee beans. I even asked the barista on duty when were these beans roasted and he mentioned he just picked them up the day before. Opened the bag the next morning to pull some espresso shots and the beans were stale, no crema at all. I actually got fresher beans from the spar down my road.
Being a home barista I look forward to experiencing new coffees and local roasters. My first experience with Tiki Tonga was good at the beginning but short lived. Staff should not lie to customers about their product which is why I don't think I would be going...

Read moreThis coffee spot was suggested to us by a friend, apparently 'the coffee is great!', he said! Well! we definitely were not disappointed. The coffee was great, the service was average but the person who I assume was an owner or manager, left a bitter taste in my mouth! It really put a damper on my first visit... maybe it was just me but knowing the Umhlanga vibe, it is still possible to be treated with racist contempt. I noticed this gentleman acknowledge the European clientele but did not even look up to greet us. It was definitely a let down! Shame, the staff tried apologizing for his bad behavior. To the owners I would like to say, well done on a beautiful establishment but that's not going to be enough, especially in our South African context! You have to do more than just serve coffee and make money!!! Because your coffee was good, I might just go back but it won't be in a hurry. There are so many more excellent coffee shops with great service. Take this...
