El Picaporte — Restaurant in Madrid

Food is ok, but price is way higher than $$ restaurant rated by google. Dinner for two adult and 2 kids (below 10) cost over 180 euro. We ordered some food and asked chef if it’s enough, chef recommended us to have a fish 50 euro for 2 people. Chef also asked if we want any red pepper, we thought it’s free, but we got charged 70 for the fish and the red peppers was also not free, The chef told us it’s 50 /kilo and he cooked one about 1.4 kilo without letting us know in advance

Also I’ve never been asked to tip from any restaurant in Spain or Portugal. Chef asked us to tip 10% . We were a bit shocking, but we live in North America and so use to tip , I just don’t know how to refuse and paid 10% extra. But my friend later told me unlike North American, it’s not necessary to tip if you don’t want to. Anyway, a unique experience in Madrid. Will do more homework when go eat...

Superb quality food (worth the price although I think it’s more like a €€€ vs €€). The service was wonderful as well. We came across this gem late when we were all starving and it was excellent. Everything starting with the bread to the olives to the olive oil (included in the 2.90€ per person aperitivo cost) to then the actual dishes we ordered - there were no exceptions to how good everything was. The chipirones were excellent and the huevos rotos con trufa también excelentes. As an American the cheesecake I know is good quality(especially for Spain) but not my fave since it does have a taste of a strong fresh cheese. The violet ice cream was very light and nice for my friend....

I would place this restaurant in the top 5% of all restaurants that I have eaten in. I thought I’d give it a try after reading the other reviews and was not disappointed. A genuinely wonderful restaurant, stylish and beautifully laid out, where the lighting and music allowed you to relax and enjoy the experience. From the avocado and orange salad that was light and refreshing, to the Sirloin steak on a bed of mashed potatoes with black truffle oil, to the apple tart, everything was perfect.
