LA TABERNA DEL CAPITÁN ALATRISTE — Restaurant in Madrid

Our experience here was a mixed bag. Off the English menu we ordered the roasted green peppers of Padron, and then under desserts the rice pudding and lemon sherbet with cava. Absolutely loved the lemon sherbet with cava. But we were puzzled when the waiter brought out the “rice pudding” which looked more like like weird cakes with rice in them and something wrapped around them. My friend took a bite out of it, and found it weird that it wasn’t sweet considering she ordered it off the dessert menu. She stopped the waiter to double check that it was rice pudding and he just said yes and zoomed off. Then when we got our bill, which included bread that had been brought to the table but we never even touched, we noticed a weird name on the list of things we had ordered. Long story short, she then asked him in Spanish what it was and that is when he told her oh it was blood pudding. My friend was visibly surprised because he was just like oh you didn’t know like everyone just knows that. I have seen blood puddings on menus before, but looking at their site the blood pudding and rice pudding are in separate sections and she pointed to the one she wanted when she ordered, and she checked with the waiter! I’ve never written a review before, but this restaurant did everything to deserve one. I can say, without exaggerating one bit, that this was the most horrible food in a restaurant I ever had and I am not sure that (or at least I hope) that I could ever experience something that is worse than this because it would make me question all my life decisions that led me to that point. The restaurant is a classic tourist trap. Looks nice and is also very crowded but the food is just horrible. The bread was old, the cheese plate a joke, the meat dry and the salad looked like the one you can buy in a plastic bag in a supermarket. However, the reason I’m writing this review is not the food itself. It’s the relation of high prices and bad quality that still shocks me. Especially, for a city like Madrid where you can get great food for little money, I almost take the audacity of the restaurant to charge those prices for the food we got personally. We even talked to the manager (again, something I have never done before) and he just responded to our complaints that the food was “normal for Madrid”. Whatever that means – it is certainly not normal. I really hope that this review saves some poor souls from choosing...

Ha sido nuestro restaurante de referencia en Madrid durante muchos años, siempre que ha habido una ocasión especial, hemos ido allí tanto solos como con familia y amigos. Pero en esta última ocasión no hemos podido por menos que sentirnos decepcionados, especialmente por el trato recibido. Pienso que la calidad de la comida ha bajado también, pero a pesar de eso, creo que no hubiéramos salido tan disgustados de haber recibido otro trato. Fuimos 4 comensales, una de las personas pidió salmón, la verdad que era una buena ración, pero venía crudo por dentro. Comentamos si se lo podían cambiar por otro tipo de plato, y de muy malas maneras, el camarero nos dijo que 'de ninguna manera, que a ver qué hacía él con el pescado entonces'. Le sugerí que nos lo pusiera para llevar, lo pagaríamos igual, y le trajera a la señora lo que quería comer, que era el mismo plato que había pedido yo, una merluza que pedí si me podían hacer a la romana en lugar de en salsa, como viene en el menú, y tras consultarlo con cocina, dijeron que si. Mi merluza estaba buena, fresca y sin espinas. La que le trajeron a mi amiga era como si hubieran cogido todos los trozos que se usan para hacer caldos y los hubieran rebozado y servido. No se lo pudo comer al estar llenos de espinas. Aún así, no nos quejamos en ningún momento, mi amiga simplemente no comió. Cuando vino el camarero a retirar el plato preguntó 'qué pasa? esto tampoco se lo puede comer o qué? se lo pongo para llevar también? El tono que empleó, para mi gusto, estaba fuera de lugar. Nosotros somos los clientes y nos dejamos allí para un almuerzo de 4 personas, más de 250 euros entre unas cosas y otras. Yo le dije que no lo había podido comer, ella no habla español, porque estaba lleno de espinas. Su respuesta fue 'muy bien, pues lo siento!'. Al ir a pagar, nos pusimos a repasar la cuenta, cosa que hago siempre en todos los restaurantes, y este señor vino a preguntarme dos veces, antes y después de pagar, de muy malas maneras 'qué pasa? que hay algo mal o qué?. Y allí, a voces, delante de los demás comensales, me estuvo leyendo todo lo que habíamos pedido, con un trato absolutamente despectivo. Nos habían cobrado una botella de agua de más, me di cuenta después de pagar y se lo dije, pero por 2 ó 3 euros que costaba, le dije que se lo quedara, la verdad. En fin, una decepción grande. Llevamos a estos amigos con la misma ilusión que hemos llevado siempre a todos aquellos a los que hemos querido invitar a pasar un buen rato y disfrutar de una buena comida, pero visto el trato, creo que se nos han quitado las ganas de volver. Aunque es un sitio que no es precisamente barato, siempre hemos pagado con gusto, puesto que ha estado a la altura. En esta ocasión, ni la comida ni el servicio...
