Disappointing Service at Yatai Market Over a Simple Drink Order
My wife and I recently visited Yatai Market, drawn in by its great atmosphere and food. However, our experience was marred by a frustrating and confusing incident over our drink order.
We specifically requested non-alcoholic cocktails, as we do not consume alcohol in any form. Initially, a waiter took our order and went to check on the availability. After a brief wait, a waitress came to inform us that our drinks were being prepared. When the drinks arrived, we were charged €20, and it was then explained that the drinks contained a liquor with a small amount of alcohol. This was completely against our explicit request for non-alcoholic beverages.
Due to the language barrier and not wanting to cause a scene, we initially accepted the drinks. However, realizing the misunderstanding, I approached the bar to explain our situation. The staff agreed to replace the drinks with non-alcoholic mojitos. Yet, to our surprise, when the replacement drinks were served, we were asked to pay an additional €12. I was under the impression that the drinks would be replaced at no extra cost, considering they were not what we ordered and remained untouched.
This situation could have been easily resolved with a simple replacement of the drinks, or even a sincere apology. The non-alcoholic mojitos, typically made with lime juice, sugar, mint, soda water, and ice, are not costly ingredients that would justify such a charge. The insistence on additional payment for their mistake shows a lack of understanding and customer service acumen.
Moreover, the communication was solely in Spanish, which added to our difficulty and frustration. It's disappointing that such a lovely venue would handle a customer service issue so poorly, especially over something as simple as adhering to a non-alcoholic...
Read morePossibly the best casual Thai/Japanese/Chinese/Filipino/Korean and generally Asian food Madrid. I realize this is a broad brush but it's a market/food truck type setup with multiple vendors and food options. It's very casual and can get a little crowded, but generally we have no issues finding a seat.
On this visit I had a Thai green curry. Food was fast, hot, and delicious. I also had some vegetable wontons that were good, if the portion was a little small. All of the food was served with some vegetable garnishes, which was appreciated.
My wife had sisig, and it's worth noting that this is one of the few places we've been to in Madrid, if not Europe, that tries to make an authentic sisig. The meat is well chopped, a good level of spice, and served with an egg.
If you get a chance, one of the stalls serves mango sticky rice which is absolutely heavenly.
Draft beer and cocktails are available. It would be nice if they improved this it seems to be hit or miss what they can make, even if they have it listed. For example, they have several Bulleit signs but they apparently don't stock Bulleit and were not able to make an old fashioned.
Be aware, too, that there is no tap water available and you cannot bring in outside drinks. They sell...
Read moreThe food was terrible. I am a huge fan of pad thai and was craving it really badly, so when we found this place & was very excited. I thought the atmosphere was great but it gets really loud when it’s crowded (I guess it adds to the street market vibe). I got Funky Chen pad thai, bao buns, and gyoza. They were all underwhelming at best. The chicken in the bad thai was all chewy/fatty and the noodles were very bland, the only flavorful parts were the lime and peanuts. The bao buns were mostly bread bun and had barely a mouthful of meat, and the gyoza was also bland and soggy. I had such high hopes and it’s a shame it was so bad, I had been hyping up pad thai to one of my friends on the way there and unfortunately, this experience has turned him away from the dish completely. The food was done fast so I want to think that that contributed to the poor quality, or perhaps it was the chef we had in particular. I still think this place can be good, but it’s gonna need a...
