BAR X by Ricard Camarena — Restaurant in Valencia

Excellent tapas bar with an elevated take on traditional plates. It is a bit more expensive than many good tapas locations in Valencia, but the quality of the food and nice portions make it worth it. Ricard Camarena restaurants are always a step above. They have an excellent wine selection and many options for vegetarians and non-drinkers, which is not always the case in Spanish restaurants. Service is very friendly and helpful. It is also in the Mercado de Colón, which is such a fun place for food and drink. Update: excellent the 2nd and 3rd time we have visited. Our group of five went to this eatery on the basement floor of Mercat Colon. We had a variety of dishes to share and some for ourselves individually. Generally the quality of the food was excellent. However portions for the shared items were on the small side, and the food/portions did not justify the cost. The atmosphere was, in a word, terrible. Very loud, and about as attractive as a food court in a shopping mall. It was very difficult to get the attention of any waiter. When I asked for ketchup for my hamburger (€18.50), I was told no, not until I tried the burger first. Umm, really? Dropped by Bar X today at lunchtime, had no issue finding a table. Having been at Camarena's establishment in Mercat Central we expected the same kind of long lines and waiting times but were pleasantly surprised. We had the patatas bravas (very good although a bit on the pricey side) and the Pepito de Secreto Iberico and the Pepito de Vacuno. Both great but we both prefered the Vacuno one better (had a more creamier texture and better experience overall).
