Review for Out of Africa Restaurant – Waterfront, Stone Town, Zanzibar
Dining at Out of Africa Restaurant on the waterfront of Stone Town is an unforgettable culinary experience. Under the expert direction of Executive Chef William Shoha, this elegant yet relaxed restaurant captures the true essence of Afro-Fusion cuisine. Every dish bursts with creativity and local flavor — from the silky squash and pumpkin soup to the vibrant Swahili Dinner Menu selections. The Vegan Okra Red Curry was a revelation — rich, aromatic, and beautifully balanced — while the Sesame-Crusted Tuna was cooked to perfection, tender inside with a delicate crunch outside.
The Swahili Signature Cocktails elevate the evening even further. The “Passion Sunset,” a perfectly blended mix of vodka, passion fruit, grenadine, and triple sec, is tropical bliss in a glass. Dessert was an equally delightful finale — house-made coconut banana ice cream with tropical fruit sauce and a divine passion fruit cheesecake drizzled with tamarind sauce.
The cozy bar adds charm and intimacy, and the adjoining boutique shop offers high-quality African arts and goods that reflect Zanzibar’s cultural spirit. Above all, the warm island hospitality and attentive staff make every guest feel like family. Out of Africa is more than a restaurant — it’s a celebration of taste, art, and...
Read moreFirst off, the food that Chef William prepares is really tasty. We had jumbo prawns and lobster wraps the first time we came. The prawns were more like small lobsters and the lobster wraps were like spring rolls with crunchy vegetables inside. The only thing stopping us from giving a 5 star is that the pours on the wine were really really small which we mentioned to Mike the manager. The next time we came we had the fresh fish fillet and the chicken in green curry along with perfectly cooked al dente vegetables (the pour on the wine this time was much more reasonable). The only thing stopping us from giving 5 stars this time was that for starters we ordered tapas but our main course came before the starters so we cancelled them. We wanted starters not afters. So they’ve only been open less than a month so hopefully time will fix these missteps. Lastly, the prices are very fair: $43 for the curry chicken, fish fillet, martini and glass of wine (excluding gratuity). Give it a try. I don’t think you’ll be...
Read moreWe stumbled upon this place walking back from Forodhani Gardens to our hotel. It was pretty full and looked like it had a great vibe, so we wandered on in. What a fantastic find! We ended up eating there for both lunch and dinner the next day, too.
We had several entrees that were all very, very good. The Seafood Thai Green Curry, the Cheeseburger, the Chicken Red Curry, and all of the soups. Definitely do not skip the Turmeric Polenta Fries -- they are addictively good and we ended up ordering extra portions several times. We probably tried 8 or 9 cocktails among our group's three visits, and all were excellent (and definitely not watered down like many bars do in the area). And finally, every dessert item was top notch, too, especially the milkshakes. We really did love everything we tried!
The service was outstanding (super friendly and quick), prices were very fair for the area, and the restaurant itself is clean and well-decorated. Absolutely our favorite restaurant...
