The Jewel of Sukhumvit: Chequers Bar Nestled in the most vibrant area of Sukhumvit Soi 4 in Bangkok, Chequers Bar has always been a beacon of warmth and hospitality. This year, it achieved a new accolade: voted the best beer and food destination in Thailand. Travellers, expats, and locals alike flocked to the bar, not just for its exceptional offerings but for the unparalleled experience of its cosy, friendly atmosphere. At the heart of Chequers Bar is its charismatic owner, Nick Harris. Originally from Cornwall, Nick had moved to Thailand nearly two decades ago, bringing with him a love of hearty food, great beer, and warm company. Over 17 years, he transformed the bar into a sanctuary where cultures collided in the best way possible. The secret to Chequers’ success isn’t just the meticulously curated selection of beers—ranging from international craft brews to local Thai favourites—or the mouthwatering menu that features everything from traditional Thai dishes to British pub classics. It is the people. The staff at Chequers Bar are legendary. Known for their stunning beauty, infectious smiles, and unmatched professionalism, they make every guest feel like family. Whether you are a regular or a first-timer, the warm welcome is the same: a radiant smile, a cold drink in hand, and a heartfelt "welcome home" vibe that lingered long after you'd left. Nick, ever the gracious host, credits his success to his team. "It’s the girls who make this place special," he often says, raising his glass. "Their smiles light up the room, and their service is what keeps people coming back." The eclectic offerings of Chequers Bar included everything from live TV sports nights to social evenings, all set against the backdrop of Bangkok’s pulsating nightlife. Yet, despite its location in one of the city’s liveliest streets, Chequers has an almost magical ability to feel like a slice of Cornwall transplanted to Thailand—a home away from home. Travel bloggers raved about the "5-star service in a humble setting," and reviews pour in, praising the “unbeatable combination of beer, food, and smiles.” Awards followed, cementing Chequers’ place as a must-visit destination in Bangkok. On the night the bar received its latest accolade, Nick raised a pint surrounded by his staff and loyal patrons. “To 17 incredible years and many more to come!” he toasted. The crowd erupted in cheers, and the night turned into a celebration of everything that make Chequers Bar unique. Whether it was your first time or your hundredth, Chequers Bar promises one thing above all: a warm welcome, a cold beer, and memories that will stay with...
Read moreGood range of beers that are reasonably priced especially during happy hour.
Staff are as good as ever.
Extensive menu of Thai & British dishes.
Longstanding owner Nick is still running the show and long may that continue.
Plenty of TV's showing sport.
Good cross section of expats and tourists drink and eat here although unsurprisingly, things are quiet just now as some Covid restrictions remain so people who would normally come to Thailand for their holiday are going elsewhere.
There are a couple of things that I neglected to mention so I've added to my original post.
If you're coming here by Skytrain disembark at Nana and leave the station at exit 2. Walk along Sukhumvit then turn left on to Soi 4. Chequers is a couple of minutes away on the left hand side.
The other thing is that if you want to see how Guinness should be poured properly come to Chequers. There's plenty of places in my home town of Bournemouth that could learn from here.
Further edit Nov 2024. Remains as good as ever. The main news is that Nick the owner is...
Read moreMy wife and I ate dinner in the evening there, and on one morning we had a late breakfast there too. This Pub is a friendly, small and exceptionally clean establishment situated on a fairly notorious street, hence it is just fantastic for people watching and marvelling at the extremely fascinating sights that wander or totter passed! I found the Guinness to be of a very good standard, but I had to try several times just to make certain as it seemed to slip down my throat with me hardy noticing! To have a break from Thai cuisine we chose to eat British food for both dinner and breakfast from a fairly extensive menu, and both meals were excellent, and served by very efficient, courteous and happy waitresses. We were made to feel very welcome by all the staff, and the regulars at the bar were a sober and a pleasant bunch. I would certainly take young children there without hesitation, and my wife and I will be revisiting this pub next month on our travels back...
