I stumbled upon Sugam completely by accident while wandering through the Silom area, and wow - what a discovery! This place is the definition of a hidden gem. No fancy decor, no tourist traps, just authentic South Indian food at prices that’ll make you do a double-take.
First thing I noticed? The place was packed with Indian families, office workers, and what looked like homesick expats getting their comfort food fix. When locals are lining up, you know you’ve found something special.
I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the menu - most dosas under 200 baht, thalis starting at 150 baht, and even their “thali” options barely hitting 300 baht. In Bangkok’s current food scene, these prices feel like they’re from another decade. But here’s the kicker - the quality is absolutely phenomenal.
I went with the South Indian Thali (190 baht) and it was a feast! The banana leaf presentation was authentic, the sambar had that perfect tangy depth, and the chutneys were house-made perfection. The dosas are crispy, paper-thin, and massive. I also had their chai - properly spiced and comforting, exactly what you’d expect from a good South Indian place.
Their variety of dosas is incredible - from classic masala to unique options like Mysore masala and Rava dosa. The idlis were fluffy clouds, and don’t get me started on their uttapam - perfectly spiced and cooked to perfection.
Sure, it’s not Instagram-pretty. The seating is basic, the ambiance is no-frills, and the service is straightforward. But that’s exactly what makes it authentic! This feels like stepping into a proper South Indian canteen. The staff clearly knows their regular customers, and there’s this warm, community feeling that you just can’t manufacture.
In a city where “authentic” Indian food often means overpriced hotel restaurants or touristy spots, Sugam is refreshingly real. This is where Indians come to get proper comfort food. The fact that they can serve this quality at these prices in central Bangkok is honestly miraculous.
Come hungry - portions are generous The chai is excellent and properly spiced Don’t judge by the simple interior - focus on what’s on your plate Peak lunch hours can get busy, but it’s worth the wait
This is exactly the type of place that makes Bangkok’s food scene so incredible - unassuming spots serving world-class food at prices that don’t break the bank. If you want real South Indian food, skip the fancy places and come here. Your taste buds and wallet will thank you!
Pure authenticity at unbeatable prices. This is what food discovery in Bangkok is all...
Read moreMy food had hair in it, and when I told the waitress about it, she said she’d take care of it and walked away. We had to remind her to come replace it. Then, she came and took it away, but never came back to replace it. I then had to remind her that she had to bring it since I’m paying for it, but she never brought it, so I was missing one of my curries the whole time but they still made me pay full price.
Then, they forgot to give cups with the water we asked. We had to ask and they brought it out. The cups were dirty and had curry on them, but the waiter just wiped it away with his hand in front of us and gave it to us. It wasn’t sanitary at all.
On top of that, they originally messed up my friend’s order and were trying to bring her what I ordered. She ordered the 12 sides, but they were trying to bring her the leaf with the 18 sides. We had to tell them that her order was different.
Also, we had to ask for them to put the aircon on. When we did, the waiter put the fan on, but not the aircon. It was still so hot, so we asked for the aircon and finally he put it on.
The terrible service is the reason why I won’t...
Read moreSugam has always been one of my go-to restaurants whenever I’m in Thailand. I had previously tried their branch in Pattaya and had a great experience there. With the same expectations, I visited their Bangkok outlet, but I must admit I was a bit disappointed.
While the thali items were neatly arranged, the authentic South Indian flavor was missing. The taste was average and did not live up to the standard set by their Pattaya branch. The restaurant is split across two small rooms located opposite each other in a narrow lane. The seating is just okay—not particularly comfortable—and the overall ambiance is quite basic, resembling a simple house setup.
The lane leading to the restaurant is very narrow, making it hard to locate. Taxis cannot enter; only bikes can manage. A helpful landmark is the Thai-Burma Restaurant—Sugam is located in the lane right next to it.
Overall, I would call this place a one-time visit. If they intend to attract regular customers, especially those familiar with authentic South Indian cuisine, they need to work on enhancing their flavor and overall...
