Nothing would stop me from giving today's experience a five stars rating expect for the chewy beef on my "Laghman" dish which I've enjoyed a lot. Laghman is a sort of fresh hand pulled noodles prepared probably in a broth with lighltly stir-fried vegetables. In my mind I assume the main difference of Chinese food and Uğur food is that the latter feels lighter and fresher, the taste of the ingredients are not masked under heavy layers of thick sweet and sour soya sauce or other sauces, which make the taste clearer with a tangy feel coming from either lemon juice or a kind of vinegar or a mix of both, I'm not sure. I went for the most basic Laghman which as I said before, I loved it but a couple of 2 pieces of beef where impossible to chew or swallow so I disposed off them in a paper tissue and went on enjoying the rest of the dish Un interrupted. The other dish I ordered was the "Chochure", an Uğur take on the Chinese wanton soup which put the latter in shame now on, as it was loaded with fresh aromatic flavors coming from the freshly chopped coriander, sliced garlic, onion, tiny pieces of tomato, a thin layer of fatty broth and the manti itself which is filled with beef, garlic and probably suited onions with black paper, there might me hints of cumin but I'm not sure and if there was onion in the dumpling fillings then it must be finely chopped and suited as ther was no harshness in the the taste except for the garlicky flavor which I did not mind at all. It was a fresh spring like aromatic soup which I recommend highly. It is a big portion though, so bring a partner to help you eat this one alright with other items from...
Read moreThis is our Uyghur restaurant of choice for in Istanbul. While we’ve ordered a variety of dishes in the past, we have simplified our order to the same consistent dishes: 2 types of lagmen, fried green beans and eggplant, and the green onion with beef.
We can always depend on this restaurant to be consistent over the past 6+ years. However, on my last visit, every dish was lacking in flavor. It wasn’t until we asked them if they could take it back and re-season the green bean dish that it regained its original flavor. Unfortunately, they didn’t take the initiative to do that to all our dishes even though we had told them the flavor on every dish was off. The napa cabbage seemed overcooked and the flavors were muted and dull, lacking the personality of Uyghur spices.
I know it’s unfair to compare, but coming from the food service in America is very different. They are more active about how to make things right, so when I told them that something was wrong with the food (as a regular customer) I was very surprised to see no action from them.
After this experience, it was harder to swallow the price tag. Six dishes for over 400tl per person. If we come back, we will pay an expensive price for bland food with unsatisfactory service again?
Despite this, I know this is just one visit out of the numerous times I have come here which is why I still give it 4/5 stars. After a conversation with one of the new employees about our bad experience, he heard out all our complaints and was apologetic about it. It was only his second day but his attitude was really to take accountability and make sure we come back for a...
Read moreBased on restaurant reviews, we went for late lunch, myself, and my son on a Friday. Service was below average, although the place had very few customers. Food was way below average, especially the "Genbenci Kuru Kavrulmuș Tavuk," a chicken dish. It was salty, very dry, and comprised of fried small cuts of chicken with Bones. We hardly found any meat on it. If the dish was intended like that, "fried bones with some meat and skin," then they should not charge TL888 for the order. To be fair, the quantity was a bit too much for one person, yet still it was way expensive. The second dish we ordered was the "G. Soman, a Kuru Kavrulmuș Lagmen" was not cooked well. Our 3rd dish was "Patlican Biber Kavurmasi," which was above average, yet still expensise (TL388) for a vegetable dish. Overall, and although we are very familiar and fond of Asian cuisines, we were really disappointed with this place and do not...
