Came here last year on the advice of someone who said the owner was previously the chef at Coco Bistro. We had been to Coco Bistro many times but in recent years had declined.
Last year I would have given it 5 stars. This year its a much different story. I can honestly say the target market is "young and dumb".
The wine list is marginal with a few middle grade selections at about a 6X markup. We selected a bottle that retails at about $20 for $86, which I'd live with if the rest of the experience was good.
We had the Bao Buns (which were excellent), the "smoked ribs" which were obviously devoid of any smoke. Tender yes, but not smoked. The tuna sashimi was OK but had some weird herb which really didnt seem to work.
Main courses- two of us had skirt steak. It came out cold. We didnt make a big deal over it but asked 3 times for salt and pepper. It finally was a manager who brought it after 5 minutes (everything cold at this point, our server, no where to be found). Skirt steak is usually a very well marbled, juicy, tender cut. This was tough.
My daughter's short rib was probably the biggest disappointment. Again, one would expect short rib to be falling off the bone. This was tough but fatty requiring a steak knife to cut. She left it.
After about 20 minutes of us finishing our meal, our server reappeared and ask " was everything good?" My reply of "Not really, it was OK". Her response was a robotic and disingenuous "Excellent!".
She asked if we wanted to see a dessert menu and we asked for the check. Upon running my credit card, she dropped the receipt for signature without a pen. While I intended to leave a small tip to show my displeasure, this will go down in history in my life where I didn't leave a tip (fine print note, its Island protocol to add a 10% "sevice charge" so she did get that.)
Leave this place for the trendy crowd and spend your money in places like Caicos Cafe, Le Bouchon or Grace's Cottage.
My daughter's...
Read moreLet me start by evaluating the food before I get to my other critiques about the establishment. To start, service was amateur but we placed our order. We requested to move tables due to the breeze which was no problem and greatly appreciated. When our appetizer, the lobster dumplings, arrived they looked delicious. The presentation was beautiful. The dough was more of an empanada dough and chewy. Our main entrees arrived and the presentation was on par. However, the Peking Duck with scallion pancakes did not have any crispy skin, which is what Peking Duck means. Also the scallion pancakes disintegrated due to being over sauced. My sisters pork chop was good, however it was over cooked. My mom really enjoyed the short ribs.
The service people were MIA. They did not check in with us after we received our food. Our server was no where to be found so I went to seek out someone to assist with bringing us our check. I saw the host/manager and approached him. I asked him to have someone drop off our check so we can close out. He responded by saying - sure babe. I could not believe his disrespectful response. I told him never to call me babe again and returned to the table. He then came by to bring us our check and he asked us how our dinner was. We responded that it would have been nice if someone cared to ask us about our food after it arrived. I also mentioned that the Peking Duck dish was not very good and he responded - yeah, we’ve been getting a lot of complaints about that dish. I thought to myself, why is it on the menu? He then turned to my sister to ask her how her pork chop was in which she responded - good but dry. He condescendingly responded and said - yeah, usually I order mine medium rare. She quickly responded that she was not asked how she would like it cooked. In closing, don’t go there if you expect great food and great service without running into an incompetent manager who takes...
Read moreWe have been coming to Turks for 20 plus years. We have enjoyed many great meals here. Lasts night’s meal ranks as probably the best we have ever had. Thats not just my opinion, everyone in our family said the same.
Most of us ordered the filet, and it was delicious, you only needed a butter knife to cut it. It did melt in your mouth. Maybe one of the best steaks I’ve ever had. Top 5 for sure.
Boa buns were tasty. Tuna was excellent. Dessert was on point.
The head bartender came over during the night, asking us how we were enjoying our time, he shared some history of the owners, and how the restaurant came to be. Very personable, kind and welcoming in an authentic way. We ordered a few special cocktails, and again, we all enjoyed them. We also shared a great bottle of Cabernet for dinner.
For being open for only 2 weeks, they performed at a very high level. Service was excellent. Our waitress (and a few other helpers) was attentive and kind. It really is crazy to think they have only been open 2 weeks. Great job team!
If I were to give it any kind of criticism it would simply be the location. It is totally fine as is, but if they could move to a spot with a view of the ocean, they would honestly have one of the best overall dinning experiences in Turks. They have done excellent with interior design, comfortable seating, creating a cozy, hip vibe with the space they had. They also play country music!! (Which we enjoy)
Keep up the great work, and congratulations on all that you have accomplished in such a short time!! We...
