Swoon Gelato, Bath — Restaurant in Bath

As an Italian living in Bath, I am immensely grateful to Swoon for making proper Italian gelato. It’s such a rare thing in the UK! Hazelnut, pistachio and tiramisu are the best flavours by far. Unfortunately there is no dark chocolate flavour that can go with those three. The bacio flavour is good, but it’s vegan. The chocolate sorbet is good, but it’s not gelato. The brownie flavour is ok, although never as good as the others. I had fiordilatte once and it was astonishingly good, but I guess it wasn’t popular enough because I haven’t seen it anymore. I hope it comes back! It was much better than the current vanilla flavour. I also wish they trained their stuff a bit better, because they don’t seem to know how to fill a 1 litre tub (and this is the reason for my 4 stars) Unfortunately every time we place an order on Deliveroo the tub is either only partially full (i.e. less than 1 litre, and it’s expensive!) or the flavours are not properly placed inside the tub (you have to order 4 flavours, but you don’t get the same amount for each flavour, as you would in Italy, and it often looks messy :(( Other than that the ice cream is made in heaven, I always recommend it, and I buy it every time we have guests over. I feel so lucky we can get it in Bath!

Mini-update (01/2023): we haven't had the problem with the 1-litre tub being half full anymore. The last few orders were properly filled and perfectly tidy. I'm so relieved about that, because it means we can keep buying it!!!

I've been to Swoon many times and have generally had good ice cream. However, as with many places, it takes one bad experience to put you off and hence the low rating here.

I recently purchased two scoops, including one of Pistachio (I always get a pistachio). This time it tasted terrible and I actually went back to let them know that it tasted off/bad. Initially, I just wasn't believed but then they did say that they recently changed that one to Vegan. After trying it, one of the servers did agree that she used to like pistachio but doesn't now... So for one, it felt a bit wrong to display it as Pistachio as it usually is, rather than clearly show that it's different (VEGAN pistachio). But it also felt like poor service not to offer a replacement scoop, or refund etc and instead watch me throw the rest of the ice cream in the bin.

As an additional note, I do also find it expensive here; £5.25 for two scoops in the cup. For perspective, I visited the World Championship-winning gelateria (Dondoli) in Italy and paid the equivalent of 3 euros for farrrr...

I came to Bath recently, for the first time, on a mini little break before starting at the University part time. I did my research before travelling and being obsessed with gelato, had to swing by Swoons. I ended up coming here twice on my two nights in Bath. I tried the Pistachio, Hazelnut, and Fudge Brownie. All of these flavours were absolutely fantastic and pleasantly strong - I have had so much gelato which is bordering on flavourless and disappointing, but that was not the case here! The gelato is beautifully smooth, as one would expect from gelato! There is also seating inside and outside, which is great when you just want to sit and enjoy some gelato! The only reason I did not give 5 stars is due to the price and portion size, simply having had larger portions for the same price at other gelato shops (even in London). Nevertheless, Swoons gelato is of great quality, and I would definitely recommend coming here if you're in Bath and want some authentic...
