There was a bug (a roach?) on my table tonight. I moved to Bath a few months ago and have eaten at Yum Yum Thai around 8-9 times. Their good has been fairly tasty, generous and fast to arrive. The waitresses are generally friendly, though management has seemed less so. (The turnover of waitresses seems fairly high.) The dining room has seemed relatively clean but is pretty basic. Accordingly, their prices are not as high as Giggling Squid, which has better food but higher prices and is usually quite busy.
The last time I suggested to my wife we come here, she declined, saying that she had noticed that they had let dirty dishes accumulate even though they were not busy. She also mentioned that the toilet was not very clean. Nevertheless, I decided to come alone tonight to get a quick and decent Thai meal.
As I was completing my payment, I saw that there was a bug on my table - it appeared to me to be a roach, though I'm not an expert and haven't seen a roach for years. (In fact, there had also been a fly hovering around my table during my meal.) I pointed out the bug to the waitress and she proceeded to squash it with a napkin and pick it up.
Needless to say I was a bit disgusted but wasn't quite sure what to do. The next time the manager came into my room I pulled him aside (not wanting to make a scene) and told him about the bug and that I thought it was a roach. He said that they had 'never had a problem' and that perhaps it came in from outside when they had the doors open earlier. At some point he said 'categorically no' - whether to the idea that they had a problem or to the idea that it was a roach, I'm not sure. But he then went off to his duties. (In fairness, I should note that they have a rating of 5 on the UK food hygiene site.)
Under the circumstances, I would ordinarily expect some kind of apology if not an offer of a free meal. I was offered neither. Given my experience tonight and my wife's earlier observations, I'll not be returning. If you're looking for good Thai food in Bath, I recommend The Giggling Squid, which is just around the corner and has excellent food (and lovely toilets,...
Read moreI went to your restaurant for lunch. I had a reservation and your staff seated me at a window-side table. Today was a really sunny day, so I asked the staff if they could pull down the curtain to block the sunlight. The curtain near my friend’s seat could be closed, but when I tried to pull mine, someone behind the counter suddenly shouted, “You can’t close that one!” At first, I thought maybe it was broken, so I was fine with that. But then that person said, “If you close it, it will block the restaurant’s menu that people can see from outside.” Honestly, I don’t understand why that had to be said in such a rude tone. I didn’t choose that seat myself — it was given to me. I understand the reason, but I don’t understand why they had to talk to me like that. It made me feel like I did something wrong, and it honestly ruined my mood. Because of that, I couldn’t even enjoy the food anymore. The whole experience was really...
Read moreWhenever my wife and I travel around the country, one of our favourite things to do is seek out the city’s Thai cuisine. More often than not, we find that many of the Thai chains don’t quite capture that authentic taste – but Yum Yum Thai in Bath was the real deal!
From the moment we stepped in, the experience was fantastic. The menu is packed with plenty of dishes to choose from, and everything we tried (and we tried a lot over our two-day stay!) was absolutely delicious and bursting with flavour. The food tasted genuinely authentic, like something you’d expect in Thailand itself.
On top of the great food, the team at Yum Yum were incredibly welcoming and friendly. They were happy to cater to all requests, including vegan and vegetarian options, which made the experience even better.
If you’re in Bath and love Thai food, do yourself a favour and get down to Yum Yum – it’s as...
