I’ve been frequenting Birmingham for almost 10 years and yet I’ve somehow never set foot in Mount Fuji until earlier this month.
What a crime because the place is lovely!! I came with my boyfriend on a Friday afternoon. It was pretty quiet so we were seated quickly and handed menus. I tried a melon float and my boyfriend had the coke float and both were so good, but the melon float was on another level.
We tried a little bit of everything, starting off with eel nigiri, chicken gyoza and karaage. The karaage was my favourite of the three, the chicken was soooo juicy and the lemon garnish was nice and fresh. The eel nigiri isn’t the best I’ve had but it was still tasty. The chicken gyoza was hot and tasty but I wish I’d known the gyoza was deep fried and not steamed, as I much prefer my gyoza the latter.
I ordered the shoyu chicken ramen and my boyfriend had the beef udon. My ramen broth was so good and the noodles were delicious with the perfect amount of chew. My only criticism was that the chicken was the same as the one that came with the karaage — meaning it was breaded. I prefer unbreaded chicken breast anyway but the breading obviously went quite soggy in the broth. Overall it was still a stunning dish though, sooo yummy!!
My boyfriend still hasn’t stopped taking about the udon he ate here even after a few weeks. I tried some of the beef and it was amazing, and for my boyfriend’s first time trying udon it left a good impression on him! He loved it and had been asking to go back ever since.
We finished off with a matcha doriyaki which was perhaps the worst value item at £4.95 for a single pancake. I assume it had just been taken out the freezer—which to be fair I’m used to at most Japanese restaurants—because the middle was still quite frozen. It was still really yummy though I wish there’d been two for the price.
Overall great value for money and incredibly tasty food! We ate so much and it only came to about £60 overall which I’d consider fantastic considering how much we ordered. I‘ll definitely be back soon, even if it’s just to shut my...
Read moreMost people will walk past Mount Fuji on a daily basis hopping around the Bullring. For many, there’s that ‘other place’ that sells ramen, donburi etc…
The food at Mount Fuji makes their ramen taste like puddle water. Myself and a friend visited and tried two different types of ramen and some miso soup. All were exceptional, and I use that word rarely to describe food. Truly exceptional.
I had the Chicken spicy tonkotsu ramen with added pork belly, and was blown away first by the portion size. This food meant business. The proportion of protein to noodle to broth is perfect, and you get two veg gyozas pierced perfectly on the top of the dish not to get soggy. My friend had the prawn ramen tonkotsu style and not only were the prawns huge, they were clearly fresh before being panko fried.
There’s a reason there’s no condiments on the table. You simply don’t need them. Traditionally every ramen shop in Tokyo would have a slightly different broth, and you would learn to choose what you like. There’s space in the options to choose your base and heat. You don’t need to add anything to it. It’d be like asking for Ketchup in a French restaurant.
The miso soup, beautifully served and a wonderful palette cleanser. The range of drinks are vast, and they even have some in a little store to take home. Someone please buy me the sake serving set!!!
Exceptional service, polite, and the staff know Japanese which is a bonus for anyone learning the language. The menu also serves bento boxes and other rice dishes as well as sushi. Although we didn’t order these, they looked great from afar. The music ranges from calming instrumental to K/J Pop, but the food is so good you barely notice.
If you get stuck waiting ‘at the other place’, turn around and walk up the left ramp. You won’t be...
Read moreHorrible experience, the photo explain how trash the service is. The waiter got confused so easily. We wanted to order 5 main meals as there 5 of us. We ask for 1 ramen with pork and chicken and then ordered a another meal but they sold out. So we ask for another ramen with chicken and change the other ramen with pork. He read the order out and we confirmed if there 5 main meals. He says yes. We got our food and half way through my mother still waiting for her meal, we asked and he said thata all the order. He made the ramen with pork and chicken (2.50 extra) and then saying sorry, sorry. Asked for ramen but he said kitchen closed. So my mother left with no main meal. Asked for service discount for the drama, he says he take off the 2.50 because of the extra chicken. He feels 2.50 worth my mother being starving and have to go to another restaurant for her to eat. The table wasn't clean as there was a empty beer can on the table, when i open the beer we ordered, it fizz up and spilled on the table, phone and myself. We have to grab a cleaning cloth from the counter as the waiter doesn't understand and we clean it ourselves. Worst restaurant experience, if you want to have a rant after the restaurant for an hour, this place is the one. Overall the food was good, not going to deny that but to leave my mother starving isn't...
